The Registered Nurse in Outpatient Surgery assesses, plans, implements or delegates, and evaluates total nursing care, providing and directing care for a group of patients in accordance with established philosophy. The nurse works effectively with other shifts and departments to support continuity of care. Outpatient Surgery provides pre-anesthesia, post-anesthesia, and post-procedural care. Care includes assessing patients’ physical status, preparing them for surgery or procedures, providing pre-operative education, supporting recovery after local or regional anesthesia or completion of Phase I PACU care following general anesthesia, and preparing patients for discharge home. Care follows the American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses’ standards, practice recommendations, and interpretive statements. Anesthetic agents are not administered in the Outpatient Surgery Department. The department uses a multidisciplinary approach and works with anesthesiology physicians and CRNAs. Therapies include patient-specific pre-operative preparation; post-operative observation and evaluation of hemodynamic stability; oxygen administration and pulse oximetry; arterial and venous sheath monitoring and removal; and written discharge instructions for home and follow-up care. Outpatient Surgery is open Monday through Friday, 0530–2200, and closed on weekends and holidays, with a standby team for unexpected Saturday or holiday cases.
