About The Position

WakeMed offers an accredited year-long Nurse Residency Program called “Putting the Puzzle Together” designed to help new graduate nurses bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world practice. This program has been guiding new nurses since 2004, with a high retention rate. Residents are paired with trained preceptors, supported by two dedicated Nurse Residency Coordinators, and progress through the year with a cohort of peers. The program includes six milestone classes focused on topics such as quality improvement, clinical judgment, time management, ethics, career development, and evidence-based practice. Additionally, residents receive specialty clinical training in areas like Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation, Basic Arrest Management, and NIH Stroke Scale.

Requirements

  • Graduates of an accredited ADN or BSN program
  • Newly licensed RNs or nurses with 6 months or less of post-licensure experience
  • Candidates eligible for RN licensure in North Carolina
  • Registered Nurse Required
  • Diploma Nursing Required - Or Associate's Degree Nursing Required
  • No Experience Required

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care.
  • Develop clinical judgment, critical-thinking skills, and professional nursing competencies through guided mentorship and hands-on experience.
  • Grow into a specialty such as acute care, critical care, emergency services, women’s services, or perioperative services.
  • Provide total comprehensive nursing to patients and their families through the implementation of a plan of care based on patient's developmental and health care needs.
  • Understand the needs of the organization and support the mission, values, and management of patient care services.
  • Actively support and incorporate ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice, North Carolina Board of Nursing Practice Act, WakeMed's Division of Nursing Professional Practice model, and WakeMed's Patient & Family Centered Care (PFCC) model.
