WakeMed offers an accredited year-long Nurse Residency Program called “Putting the Puzzle Together” designed to help new graduate nurses bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world practice. This program has been guiding new nurses since 2004, with a high retention rate. Residents are paired with trained preceptors, supported by two dedicated Nurse Residency Coordinators, and progress through the year with a cohort of peers. The program includes six milestone classes focused on topics such as quality improvement, clinical judgment, time management, ethics, career development, and evidence-based practice. Additionally, residents receive specialty clinical training in areas like Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation, Basic Arrest Management, and NIH Stroke Scale.
