The Registered Nurse (RN) in Outpatient Oncology Infusion utilizes the nursing process to provide ongoing, age-specific, and specialty-specific care to patients. This includes assessing educational needs, providing teaching and counseling to patients and families, and integrating health promotion and preventive aspects of care. The RN is responsible for symptom assessment and management according to the treatment plan, as well as assessing social determinants of health and coordinating care with appropriate resources. The role involves assuming primary responsibility for patient caseloads, anticipating changes in patient status, determining care priorities, and continuously assessing patient response to services. Communication with physicians and other providers to update care plans is essential. The RN administers medications, including chemotherapy, biologic therapies, antibiotics, and other intravenous medications, manages central venous access devices, and performs transfusions of blood products. Additionally, the position involves providing telephone consultation/triage, maintaining accurate clinical and patient records, assisting in staff orientation, and committing to professional development and continuous learning in the specialty area.
