About The Position

Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Ortho/Spine/ Bariatrics Unit. This is a 24-bed unit specializing in orthopedics, spine, and bariatrics, designed to provide high-quality, short-stay care. The team also sees high acuity surgical patients from Endoscopy, General surgery and GI. The average patient stay is 1 to 2 days. The RN staff can expect a 1:5 or 1:6 ratio and can expect an average of 6 to 8 patient discharges per shift. It is a well-staffed, fast-paced environment that values ongoing staff development through a comprehensive orientation program, where managers and educators meet biweekly to refine learning strategies and enhance clinical skills. The team is supported by Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) who assist with ambulation, labs, and other patient care tasks, ensuring seamless patient support. The presence of dedicated Unit Coordinators and experienced preceptors fosters a nurturing learning environment, making it an ideal place for skill development, professional growth, and long-term career advancement for those committed to excellence in surgical and orthopedic patient care. Our surgeons and team are nationally recognized for excellence through the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program ( MBSAQIP ).

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Registered Nursing (required)
  • Registered nursing License (Required)
  • Students in progress of obtaining licensure
  • BLS required within 90 days of hire
  • 1 year of acute care nursing experience preferred
  • Previous healthcare experience in GI, Endo, Surgical, stepdown, or pre/post preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Students in process of obtaining degree in Registered nursing
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing- BSN or MSN (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Perform a competent level of nursing care as demonstrated by the critical thinking model known as the nursing process.
  • Assessment, diagnosis, outcomes identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care- teaching and health promotion and evaluation.
  • Ethics, culturally congruent practice, communication, collaboration, leadership, education, evidence-based practice /nursing research, quality, evaluation, resource utilization, and environmental health encompass the actions and foundation of professional nursing.
  • Possess clinical knowledge and skills to meet standards as required by specific clinical areas.
