About The Position

Utilizing the nursing process, the RN effectively manages and provides counseling, individualized care prescriptions, does individualized and group education and delivers quality of care that is consistent with acceptable standards of nursing practice. Communicates effectively with physicians to ensure patient care. He/she assumes responsibility and accountability for his/her actions and outcomes of patient care delivered while caring for the patient. Will provide back-up coverage for Radiation/Oncology clinic nurse in Avera Cancer Institute Marshall.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, charts and relays patient health data including: Establishing and maintaining a baseline history and physical information in collaboration with provider for new and on-going clients. Visit specific data as needed such as chief complaint, vital signs, height/weight, level of pain, tolerance of therapy. Yearly age-appropriate screening or treatment related testing needs. Assurance that patient charts are comprehensive, physician orders noted, completed and documented, and complete nursing documentation of therapies delivered. Response to therapies delivered previously or during a current visit.
  • Analyzes the assessment data in determining nursing diagnoses, problems, and goals.
  • Provides triage for incoming patient related telephone calls, emergent client visits and emergencies during delivery of therapies with provider input when necessary.
  • Identifies expected outcome/goals individualized to the patient to include: Prioritization for timely client flow, Attending to routine or emergency needs of clients, Anticipatory guidance regarding expected continuing patient care needs.
  • Develops a plan of care that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes.
  • Schedules appointments, procedures and tests as needed.
  • Implements interventions identified in the plan of care: Prepares client for visit, such as pre-visit instructions/parameters, clinic orientation/routine. Assist provider during procedures, treatments, examinations and testing such as bone marrow biopsies. Administers prescribed medications. Performs tests and treatments within scope of practice. Provide patient education for tests, procedures, therapies, diagnosis, symptom management. Provide education regarding ongoing health choices/management, including wellness and health maintenance counseling.
  • Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
  • Adjusts practice to improve quality.
  • Lends clinical quality improvement efforts as needed.
  • Evaluates his/her own nursing practice in relation to professional standards and relevant statutes and regulations.
  • Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing practice, with particular emphasis in area of clinical practice; medical oncology and hematology.
  • Maintains certification in chemotherapy (Oncology Nursing Society)

  • Performs general nursing care to patients.
  • Administers prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing standards.
  • Coordinates the patient care activities for the clinic.
  • Decisions and actions on behalf of clients are determined in an ethical manner.
  • Utilizes ANA Code for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide practice decisions.
  • Prepares equipment and assists provider during procedures, treatments, examinations, and testing of patients.
  • Collaborates with the client, significant others and healthcare providers and team members in providing patient care.
  • Makes referrals to the appropriate team member regarding client identified needs.
  • Coordinates clinic patient care activities, to include patient care crisis issues and complaints.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to provider.
  • Dispenses medications as directed.
  • Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning and delivering patient care.
  • Maintains exam room/infusion center with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures infection control standards are met.
  • Oversees appointment scheduling and ensures preferences are given to patients in emergency situations.
  • Maintains timely flow of patients.
  • Performs nursing assessments and evaluations of patients and documents information.
  • Provides continuity of care through verbal and written communication.
  • Suggests solutions to patient care crisis problems and complaints.
  • Works with registration for appointments and scheduling.
  • Screens patients for appropriate information including obtaining the health history, taking vitals and conducting a nursing assessment.
  • Instructs patients in collection of samples and tests.
  • Responds to and refers incoming telephone calls.
  • Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.
  • Maintains and views patient records, charges and other pertinent information to include, but not limited to the following: chart visits at end of day and/or all necessary information and drugs prescribed, work up new patient charts, review all lab, hospital and other reports.
  • Educates patient and family about diagnostic process, medications, nutrition and maintenance of health and wellness.
  • Prepares the equipment and assists provider during procedures, treatments, examinations and testing of patients.
  • Responsible for IV administration of fluids and intravenous medications, injections and venous access maintenance and care, heplocks, working with PICC lines and porta-caths.
  • Prepares equipment and assists provider during procedures, treatments, examinations and testing.
  • Maintains exam rooms for necessary supplies and materials.
  • Ensures cleanliness in exam rooms and orders and maintains supply of medication.
  • Flexible work schedule to accommodate physician and patient needs
  • Navigates Meditech and Mosaiq software
  • All other duties as assigned.
