About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) for the Observation Unit plays a vital role in monitoring patients, supporting timely clinical decisions, and guiding them safely to the next step in their care, whether that's admission or discharge. This is a dynamic environment where assessment skills, critical thinking, and teamwork make an immediate and meaningful impact. The role combines the fast pace of the Emergency Department with the clinical depth of inpatient care.

Requirements

• Current Michigan RN license
• Associate’s degree from an accredited nursing school
• Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP)

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)

Responsibilities

• Performs plan of care intervention, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, as well as other medical care treatment.
• Documents patient care given.
• Works closely with providers to ensure patients meet observation criteria.
• Monitors patients for a period of 24-48 hours to assess their condition and determine if they need to be admitted as an inpatient or discharged.
• Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition as appropriate to care team, physician, patient, and family.
• Assists patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
• Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
• Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
• Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
