About The Position

This is a 13-week contract position for a Registered Nurse in Labor & Delivery. The role involves performing an age-specific plan of care for a designated group of patients using the nursing process. The nurse will collaborate with physicians and other health team members to coordinate procedures and treatments, utilizing leadership skills and clinical judgment to manage patient care and direct the healthcare team.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing, required.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of professional nursing experience in the related specialty.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State and/or Connecticut, required.
  • BLS required.
  • ACLS required.
  • Advanced NRP required.
  • Intermediate AWHONN required.
  • C-EFM (NCC) Required.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the patient’s physiologic health status, including conducting patient interviews, explaining policies and procedures, reviewing charts, assessing gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and neurological health status, determining mobility, sensory deficits, prostheses use, and skin condition, assessing level of pain and pain management, and communicating/documenting patient’s physiologic health status and plan of care.
  • Assesses patient’s psychosocial health status, including eliciting perception of medical/nursing care, determining coping mechanisms, knowledge level, and ability to comprehend, identifying cultural/ethnic requirements, and communicating and documenting psychological status and care plan.
  • Identifies patient outcome by developing criteria for measurement, identifying actual/potential patient problems, identifying patient’s need for teaching, and developing patient outcome statement(s) and establishing individualized patient goals.
  • Formulates the plan of care and establishes the priorities necessary to achieve expected outcome by identifying care activities, coordinating cost-effective use of supplies, equipment and medication, and documenting the plan of care and collaborating with physicians and other health team members.
  • Implements the plan of care by maintaining constant vigilance over patients care, exercising professional skills, reassessing patients as needed and appropriately revising plan of care, correctly administering prescribed treatments, correctly using equipment necessary for patient care, providing emotional support, applying scientific principles in performing procedures, making accurate observations, keeping accurate documentation, using appropriate methods of documentation, acting rapidly and effectively during emergencies, providing a calm atmosphere, communicating effectively with the patient’s family or caretakers, participating in discharge planning, and providing discharge instructions.
  • Evaluates care provided for patient outcome by demonstrating ability to measure effectiveness of care, performing variance analysis, designing, implementing, and evaluating systems to improve care, keeping accurate documentation, and using appropriate methods of documentation.
  • Collaborates with other care team members in planning and carrying out treatment regimen and provides direction to other members of the care team by collaborating with the appropriate physician, accurately interpreting and implementing treatment regimen, assisting the Physician during treatments/procedures, keeping the Patient Care Manager/designee and/or physician abreast of changes, and using clinical judgment in delegating assignments.
  • Performs grade I-IV Decubitus Care, including performing preventive skin care measures, applying simple dressings, applying warm & cold compresses, performing irrigations, and performing other procedures related to skin care.
  • Administers medications correctly and safely by correctly identifying medication, meeting standard on medication administration examination, demonstrating preparation of local solutions and I.V. drips, administering and documenting medication correctly, administering IVP medication as per policy, and educating patients and significant others related to drug and food interactions.
  • Participates in patient and family education by providing an explanation of the patient's condition, communicating assessment data, recognizing and utilizing health teaching opportunities, providing for early discharge planning, and evaluating the effectiveness of teaching.
