About The Position

Join the Inpatient Medical Surgical and Short Stay Unit at UW Health, Wisconsin's #1 hospital and a Magnet-designated organization. This unit cares for a variety of medical and surgical patients, utilizing advanced critical thinking, compassion, and teamwork. The unit has 28 beds with a 1:4 RN-to-patient ratio, focusing on evidence-based therapies and quality improvement initiatives. Nurses on this unit are supported to pursue specialty certification in Medical-Surgical Care Nursing.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months nursing experience or current participant in UW Health’s Nurse Residency Program with successful completion of the Nurse Residency Orientation on unit/similar unit.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of WI or holds a license issued by a jurisdiction that has adopted the nurse licensure compact.
  • Current CPR/BLS Certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Two (2) years of nursing experience for eICU.
  • Relevant RN Experience
  • Relevant Certification

Responsibilities

  • Care for medical and surgical patients using advanced critical thinking skills, compassion, and teamwork.
  • Be involved in cutting edge, evidence-based therapies to improve patient outcomes.
  • Provide care to patients suffering from a variety of acute illnesses, including exacerbations of chronic diseases, DKA, pneumonia, infection, as well as short stay surgical cases with an expected length of stay of 24-48 hours.
  • Care for patients post-surgery from services including plastics, urology, ENT, emergency general surgery, interventional radiology, gynecology, and neurosurgery.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and lead practice change.
  • Use advanced assessment skills and become an expert Med/Surg RN.
  • Pursue specialty certification in Medical-Surgical Care Nursing.
