About The Position

The registered nurse will perform direct patient/resident care and delegation to patient care technicians in providing care and comfort to the residents. Knowledge and compliance with all local, state and federal regulations and guidelines relating to facility care will be maintained. This position has basic medical/surgical knowledge in order to care for general surgical and orthopedic surgical patients. The role also involves interpreting information and reporting pertinent data to the physician, assessing learning needs and providing education to patients, participating in care conferences, and developing good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel. The nurse coordinates care provided by patient care technicians, organizes and prioritizes patient needs, and manages assignments and routine duties. They instruct other team members, implement clinical and technical aspects of care according to policies, and utilize clinical pathways. The position requires remaining calm in stressful situations, accurate documentation, sharing information about patient changes, participating in regulatory surveys and performance improvement activities, assisting with orientation and competencies, and ensuring a safe patient care environment. Continuous professional development through association activities, professional journals, and seminars is expected. The nurse must also understand their role in emergency preparedness procedures and perform various specialized medical procedures such as setting up and assisting with central line and chest tube insertion, inserting various tubes (cantor, nasogastric, feeding, IVs), providing care for SP catheters, surgical drains, ostomies, removing sutures and skin clips, performing CVP readings, setting up and monitoring PCA, obtaining doppler pulses, assisting in heparin therapy, applying basic traction, splints, braces, and CPM machines, cutting and trimming casts, removing wound drains, and maintaining total hip and total knee precaution measures.

Requirements

  • ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support Required Equivalent Experience (within 12 months of hire or transfer)
  • BLS - Basic Life Support Required Equivalent Experience (within 1 month of hire or transfer)
  • RN - Registered Nurse Required (State of Michigan)
  • TEAM ADVANCED - Techniques for Effective Aggression Mgt Required Equivalent Experience (within 6 months of hire or transfer)
  • Associates Degree in Nursing
  • Demonstrate competency in Microsoft Windows.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly assesses patient’s/client’s needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care, and accepted standards of nursing practice.
  • Provides direct resident care, including medication administration, treatments, call lights, assisting with transfers, responding to alarms, etc.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or participates in updating/revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information to improve patient care.
  • Processes physician/provider orders and performs physician ordered care accurately, completely and in a timely manner.
  • Follows up regarding medication changes and order clarifications.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interpret information and reports pertinent data to the physician, including pertinent clinical information.
  • Assess learning needs considering readiness, ability, preferences, and cultural / spiritual variables.
  • Provide education to meet the individual needs and ability to learn.
  • Participates in care conferences as assigned.
  • Develops and maintains good working rapport with interdisciplinary personnel to meet the needs of each patient.

  • Sets up and assists with central line and chest tube insertion and care for these tubes according to policy and procedure.
  • Inserts cantor tubes, nasogastric tubes, and feeding tubes per physician order, following proper procedure.
  • Inserts and provides care for IV's.
  • Provides routine care and instruction of Suprapubic (SP) catheters and surgical drains following physician order.
  • Provides proper care for drains and removal of same.
  • Removes sutures and skin clips, provides routine ostomy care and irrigates and packs wounds, following physician order, procedure and care plan.
  • Does accurate Central Venous Pressure (CVP) reading, according to physician order and following proper procedure.
  • Sets up, instructs and monitors use of PCA.
  • Obtains doppler pulses following proper procedure.
  • Provides routine care of gastrostomy/jejunostomy tubes according to procedure and physician orders.
  • Assists in heparin therapy protocol per procedures.
  • Applies basic traction, splints, braces, and Continuous Passive motion (CPM) machines following procedure and physician order.
  • Cuts and trims casts, removes wound drains following physician order and procedure.
  • Maintains total hip and total knee precaution measures and instructs patients.
  • Other duties as assigned.
