About The Position

The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is responsible for delivering patient care using the nursing process, including data collection, assessment, identifying and prioritizing patient needs, and evaluating care outcomes. The RNFA collaborates with the surgeon during invasive or operative procedures, ensuring a safe environment and optimal patient outcomes. This role requires the RNFA to possess and apply knowledge of the procedure and the patient's intraoperative experience throughout their continuum of care, addressing physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs in relation to age and ability to respond. The RNFA functions as a first and second assistant, and is capable of serving as the primary scrub person. This position maintains a safe and aseptic environment in the Operating Room and assists in intra-operative patient care by performing assigned technical duties. The role services neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.

Requirements

  • Graduate from accredited school of nursing.
  • Current RN license in State of South Carolina or awaiting reciprocity.
  • BLS required.
  • Graduate of an RNFA program.
  • Maintains aseptic and safe environment in the Operating Room.
  • Assists in the intra-operative care of the patient by performing technical duties as assigned.
  • This position services the following populations: neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric.
  • Licensed in the State of South Carolina or awaiting reciprocity.
  • Current CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Collects health data systematically and continuously through clinical interaction, records, assessment, and consultation with healthcare team members, considering growth and developmental needs.
  • Formulates nursing diagnoses based on health status data and establishes patient care goals.
  • Develops a plan of care prescribing nursing actions to achieve patient goals.
  • Implements nursing actions in transferring the patient according to the prescribed plan.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient and family educational needs through clinical interaction.
  • Demonstrates anatomy and physiology specific to surgical procedure requirements.
  • Creates and maintains a sterile field.
  • Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts.
  • Administers drugs and solutions as prescribed.
  • Monitors and controls the environment.
  • Performs decontamination functions.
  • Provides equipment and supplies based on patient needs and physician preferences.
  • Physiologically monitors patients during surgery.
  • Evaluates patient outcomes and measures the effectiveness of nursing care.
  • Continuously reassesses all components of patient care based on new data.
  • Performs nursing and first assisting actions demonstrating accountability, including performance improvement.
  • Enhances growth and development through in-service education, educational processes, and learning opportunities for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Under direct supervision of the surgeon, handles a variety of tissues, provides exposure, uses surgical instrumentation, sutures, provides hemostasis, and closes tissue and skin.
  • Retracts during operating procedures.
  • May clamp, cut, and tie bleeders.
  • May utilize cautery as directed by the physician.
  • Demonstrates competency and skill when suturing fascia, subcutaneous tissue, and skin.
  • Suctions surgical wounds.
  • May instill irrigation solution under the direction of the physician.
