About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice. This position involves triaging patients, obtaining patient history and vital signs, and assessing patients. The RN acts independently to initiate immediate care in life-threatening situations when a physician is absent. Care is provided for both acutely ill and non-acute patients, involving multiple procedures using complex and simple nursing skills, and assisting physicians with their procedures. The role also includes providing physical and psychological comfort to patients, their families, and visitors, as well as providing discharge and follow-up instructions. The RN is responsible for answering ambulance radios and giving appropriate pre-hospital care orders without assistance. This role requires working with various types of sophisticated equipment and handling diverse patient situations in a frequently stressful environment. Requirements

  • BLS: Basic Life Support (within 3 months of hire or transfer)
  • ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (within 12 months of hire or transfer)
  • TNCC: Trauma Nurse Core Course or ATCN (within 12 months of hire or transfer)
  • PALS: Pediatric Advance Life Support or ENPC required within one of year of hire or transfer to position.
  • RN: Registered Nurse (MI)
  • ENPC: Emergency Nurse Pediatric Course (if PALS not chosen)
  • NIMS: National Incident Management System
  • NIMS IS 100: NIMS IS 100 Introduction Incident Command System
  • NIMS IS 700: NIMS IS 700 Introduction National Incident Management System
  • Associates Degree in Nursing
  • Knowledge of nursing skills as normally acquired through 2 years experience working in the medical center or similar setting.
  • Minimum of two years experience for Weekend RN positions.
  • Competency in Microsoft Windows.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs nursing assessments, intervenes appropriately and promptly, and participates in care planning.
  • Regularly assesses patient's/client's needs and provides skilled nursing services as prescribed by the physician authorized plan of care, and accepted standards of nursing practice.
  • Processes physician/provider orders accurately, completely, and in a timely manner, and does follow up regarding medication changes and order clarifications.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of treatment plan and makes suggestions or facilitates changes in plan to improve patient care.
  • Actively participates in updating/ revising the treatment plan in collaboration with other team members, utilizing current information.
  • Uses physical assessment techniques (auscultation, percussion, palpation, observation) to identify patients physical problems and their patient care needs.
  • Recognizes self-limitations and seeks out appropriate resources.
  • Possess clinical competence in airway management, cardiac monitoring, Intravenous (IV) therapy, blood gas analysis, venipuncture and physical assessment.
  • Reassesses patient health status and identifies significant changes in conditions.
  • Individualizes plan of care.
  • Coordinates the prescribed plans with orders on health care team.
  • Communicates pertinent aspects of care to patient, family, or other health care workers.
  • Initiates home health referrals when appropriate.
  • Sets priorities and implements nursing measures which correlate with identified plan and standard of care.
  • Recognizes change in patient's condition and takes action to manage, reduce, or eliminate symptoms and promote comfort.
  • Demonstrates respect for patient's dignity and privacy.
  • Documents nursing intervention and patients response.
  • Maintains a safe patient environment and takes actions to prevent risk situations.
  • Provides for patient/family education, explains about all procedures, utilizes available educational materials, documents any instructions given to family.
  • Has effective interpersonal skills with customers.
  • Assists peers in patient care activities.
  • Recognizes stress in others and uses positive coping techniques.
  • Sets goals and prioritizes Emergency Department care to patients according to acuity.
  • Is accountable in following medical center policy and procedures and work attendance.
  • Participates in continuing education program, Medial Center Computer-based-learning modules, and ED In-service training and ED Skills Day.
