The Registered Nurse (RN) functions primarily in direct patient care, demonstrating competent clinical practice. This position involves triaging patients, obtaining patient history and vital signs, and assessing patients. The RN acts independently to initiate immediate care in life-threatening situations when a physician is absent. Care is provided for both acutely ill and non-acute patients, involving multiple procedures using complex and simple nursing skills, and assisting physicians with their procedures. The role also includes providing physical and psychological comfort to patients, their families, and visitors, as well as providing discharge and follow-up instructions. The RN is responsible for answering ambulance radios and giving appropriate pre-hospital care orders without assistance. This role requires working with various types of sophisticated equipment and handling diverse patient situations in a frequently stressful environment.
