About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) - ER is responsible for the total nursing care of assigned patients, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The role involves educating patients and their families to achieve optimal health. Access to patient health information is granted for treatment purposes only.

Requirements

  • 1 year or more of current Emergency Room experience required
  • Current CA Registered Nurse License
  • Current American Heart Association BLS certification (maintain current at all times)
  • Current American Heart Association ACLS certification (maintain current at all times within 30 days of date of hire)
  • Current American Heart Association PALS certification (maintain current at all times within 30 days of date of hire)
  • Effective verbal and written skills to communicate with people on all levels
  • Able to maintain positive working relationships with parents, families, and co-workers
  • Possess active listening skills
  • Compassionate and non-judgmental caregiver and advocate
  • Able to independently manage multiple priorities
  • Minimum of one year prior experience in Emergency / Trauma environment

Responsibilities

  • Obtains and interprets patient information based on age-specific needs and demonstrates knowledge of growth and development.
  • Initiates interdisciplinary communication and incorporates recommendations into patient care plans.
  • Provides age-appropriate care to patients in the Emergency Department.
  • Acts as a liaison between patients, physicians, families, and other health disciplines.
  • Develops, implements, and updates individualized patient teaching and Emergency Department discharge instructions.
  • Initiates and documents progressive patient and family teaching.
  • Facilitates the discharge process, ensuring all goals are met.
  • Utilizes current theories and knowledge for accurate assessments and evaluations of Emergency Department patients.
  • Completes acuity evaluations on all assigned patients according to Emergency Department protocol.
  • Manages an average caseload specific to the unit.
  • Adapts to altered work patterns, sets priorities, and modifies assignments to meet patient needs.
  • Administers prescribed medications, including IVs, blood, and blood products, verifying accuracy against the MAR.
  • Recognizes, evaluates, and intervenes appropriately in life-threatening situations.
  • Checks for and implements new physician orders within an appropriate timeframe.
  • Completes an end-of-shift review of physician orders.
  • Recognizes variances in diagnostic tests, vital signs, and assessments and notifies the physician accordingly.
  • Functions as a charge nurse as assigned.
  • Supports changes in clinical practice and patient care plans.
  • Functions as a resource to co-workers.
  • Acts as a preceptor and performs other assigned duties.
  • Ensures compliance with departmental policies and procedures, including CPGs and changes.
  • Maintains nursing practice competence through in-services and continuing education.
  • Participates in the Quality Improvement Program.
  • Monitors resource utilization and charge completion.
  • Follows the chain of command for problem resolution with a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrates accountability for supervision and communication with LVNs, unlicensed assistive personnel, and float personnel.
  • Reports, documents, and takes appropriate action for incidents and quality care issues.
  • Assesses patients for risk of injury and takes appropriate action to reduce risk and promote safety.
  • Uses restraints according to policy and explores less restrictive options.
  • Ensures accurate documentation in the medical record.
  • Serves as an advocate for patients/families by providing information and assisting with resource utilization for healthcare decisions.
  • Handles and disposes of hazardous waste safely and appropriately.
  • Handles oxygen safely.
  • Practices hand washing and uses protective wear.
  • Establishes or assesses proper patient identification prior to delivering care.
  • Requests clarification of physician orders as necessary.
