The Registered Nurse (RN) Endoscopy is responsible for the delivery of safe patient care throughout the pre-Endoscopy, Endoscopy, and post-Endoscopy periods of a patient's endoscopic experience, utilizing the nursing process framework. This role involves collaborating with physicians and healthcare team members to plan care and establish desired outcomes, ensuring the availability of necessary equipment and supplies, and involving peers in care planning and revision. The nurse will base care on specific nursing diagnoses and orders, provide safe and efficient nursing care, and keep significant others informed of patient status as directed by the physician. Additionally, the role requires adherence to universal precautions, electrical and environmental safety standards, and all federal, state, and nurse practice guidelines. The RN must be able to recognize changes in patient status, report pertinent information, conserve materials and equipment, and prepare and document specimens appropriately. The position also involves providing concise information to relief staff, appropriately delegating activities in emergencies, measuring patient responses to interventions, and ensuring equipment and supplies are returned to their proper locations. The nurse will identify and prioritize individual patient care needs based on age, physiological, psychosocial, cultural, and physical status, and plan care based on the contemplated procedure, standards of practice, admission assessment, and physician preferences. Documentation must be clear, concise, accurate, and legible, including all necessary information related to patient progress, outcomes, and interventions. The RN will also ensure completion of resuscitation records following Code Blue procedures, assess the physiological and psychosocial health status of patients, identify chief complaints, assess pain per policy, assess patient medical history, and demonstrate competency in patient identification verification and pre-procedure phone calls.
