The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Endoscopy department is responsible for delivering safe patient care throughout the pre-Endoscopy, Endoscopy, and post-Endoscopy periods. This care is provided within the framework of the nursing process. The role involves consulting with physicians and other healthcare team members to plan care and establish desired outcomes, ensuring necessary equipment and supplies are available, and involving peers and other team members in care planning and revision. The RN bases nursing care on specific nursing diagnoses and orders, provides safe and efficient care, and keeps significant others informed of patient status as per physician input. They practice and promote universal precautions, electrical, and environmental safety, and operate within federal, state, and nurse practice guidelines. The position requires the ability to recognize changes in patient status, report pertinent information, conserve materials and equipment, and prepare and label specimens according to hospital policy. The RN also provides concise information to relief staff, directs and delegates team member activities appropriately in emergencies, and measures patient responses to interventions based on expected outcomes. They ensure equipment and supplies are returned to their proper locations, identify and prioritize individual patient care needs based on age, physiological, psychosocial, cultural, and physical status, and plan care based on the contemplated procedure, standards of practice, admission assessment, and physician preference. Documentation must be clear, concise, accurate, and legible, covering all necessary information related to patient progress, outcomes, and interventions. The RN is also responsible for completing resuscitation records following Code Blue procedures, assessing the physiological and psychosocial health status of patients, identifying chief complaints, assessing pain per policy, assessing patient medical history, and demonstrating competency in patient identification verification and pre-procedure phone calls.
