About The Position

The Emergency Department (ED) at Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) is a 16-bed unit, including two trauma bays. CMH is located in South Central Virginia, serving residents of over 7 counties and North Carolina. The ED team consists of experienced Board-Certified physicians, Advanced Practiced Providers, RNs, ED Technicians, Unit Secretaries, and nursing leaders. CMH is a certified Primary Stroke Center and treats a diverse patient population from newborns to geriatrics. The ED census is growing, predicted to reach 26,000 patients annually. This is a fast-paced environment providing excellent experience in treating urgent to critical patients, including trauma, stroke, sepsis, and STEMI. CMH fosters a family and patient-centered atmosphere with outstanding teamwork, aiming to make the patient experience excellent. Nursing leadership supports continuing education and offers opportunities for professional advancement. CMH is expanding its core team to meet the growing census needs. The Clinical Nurse I role integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs, assisting the healthcare team with illness prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. This role provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. It involves delivering and documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care, as well as safely administering medications and identifying incompatibilities/interactions. The Clinical Nurse II role demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population, assisting the healthcare team with illness prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. This role recognizes and intervenes in changing patient situations, mobilizes resources for individualized patient/family needs, and provides direction, education, and leadership at the unit level. It involves delivering and documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care, as well as safely administering medications and identifying incompatibilities/interactions. The Clinical Nurse III role demonstrates clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population, assisting the healthcare team with illness prevention, wellness maintenance, and comfort provision. This role anticipates and intervenes in changing patient situations, provides direction, education, and serves as a role model. It involves delivering and documenting direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care, as well as safely administering medications and identifying incompatibilities/interactions.

Requirements

Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
One year RN experience minimum requirement

Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clinical Nurse I)
Academic Health Care Experience (for Clinical Nurse II, Clinical Nurse III)
Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clinical Nurse II, Clinical Nurse III)
Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program (for Clinical Nurse I, II, III)
Certification in specialty area (for Clinical Nurse III)

Responsibilities

Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family.
Assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
Provides direction, education, and begins to acquire leadership skills at the unit level.
Delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Recognizes changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately.
Mobilizes resources to meet the individualized needs of patient/families.
Serves as a role model in a clinical setting.
Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RN's, LPN's, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
Works all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
Practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Practices are guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
All practice is guided by and follows the VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.
