The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Emergency Department utilizes the nursing process to assess patient needs, plan and implement individualized interventions, and evaluate the effectiveness of the care plan. This role involves the patient and family in care planning and implementation, developing therapeutic relationships throughout the healthcare continuum. The RN anticipates and recognizes significant changes in patient condition, status, and care needs, providing ongoing assessment and taking appropriate action. They adapt the care plan as needed, mobilize resources, and collaborate with the healthcare team for patient-centered care. The position focuses on implementing strategies to reduce patient risk and enhance safety, assessing and individualizing patient and family learning needs, and coordinating discharge plans through an interdisciplinary approach. The role requires applying evidence-based practice, adhering to nursing and regulatory standards, and evaluating patient, team, and unit outcomes. Support for shared governance, effective communication, conflict resolution, and promoting collaboration among healthcare team members are essential. The RN assumes a leadership role in the care team, delegates appropriately, and promotes a culture of safety by identifying and intervening in potential safety issues. Ethical decision-making, respect for peers and other disciplines, and participation in quality improvement initiatives are expected. The role also involves personal and professional development, seeking learning opportunities, and timely completion of required meetings, educational programs, and annual competencies. The nurse must demonstrate knowledge and skills for age-appropriate patient care, understanding growth and development across the lifespan and assessing patient needs based on age-specific requirements.
