The Lead RN/Charge Nurse is responsible for coordinating patient care on a designated unit. In collaboration with the Clinical Manager, this role uses nursing process and clinical knowledge to coordinate members of the health care team to develop and sustain an environment that promotes excellence in clinical practice and customer satisfaction, while striving for optimal efficiency and productivity of all resources. This role is responsible for adjusting schedules and patient assignments, providing guidance and clinical support to staff, and overseeing the unit in the absence of the unit leader. The Lead RN also maintains knowledge of environmental safety and infection control, utilizes supplies and equipment appropriately, and communicates effectively with patients and families. They round on patients to evaluate safety, quality, and experience, and serve as a resource to staff, patients, and family members. The position functions as a clinical resource and role model, may serve as a preceptor, and is actively involved in interprofessional collaborative practice to ensure care coordination and continuity. They communicate with other departments to resolve operational problems, participate in quality monitoring and performance improvement programs, and facilitate patient placement and care transitions. The Lead RN provides feedback and mentoring to staff, creates an environment of teamwork and respect, and manages conflict effectively. They support the organization's mission and vision and adhere to policies, practicing in accordance with the BSMH Nursing Professional Practice Model.
