Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, the unit, and the Michigan Public Health Code, the registered nurse manages the care delivery for patients in the organization throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge. This involves utilizing the nursing process, coordinating care, delegating tasks, providing direct patient care, and documenting/communicating patient status and needs. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. Responsibilities include collecting comprehensive patient data, analyzing assessment data to identify patient needs, documenting nursing history, reviewing vital signs, analyzing assessment data to determine patient problems, identifying expected outcomes, developing a plan of care, implementing the identified plan, administering medications and treatments, maintaining patient comfort and safety, initiating patient education plans, and managing the care plan by organizing and delegating interventions. The registered nurse also evaluates progress toward expected outcomes and the effectiveness of interventions. Professional performance standards include evaluating nursing practice quality and effectiveness, attaining knowledge and competency, evaluating one's own practice, interacting with and contributing to the professional development of peers, collaborating with patients and families, integrating ethical provisions, integrating research findings into practice, considering safety and cost-effectiveness, and providing leadership. Specific responsibilities for a Scrub RN include interpreting procedure cards, assessing case carts, anticipating physician needs, observing patient condition changes, evaluating case information, maintaining awareness of equipment and instrument use, anticipating needs in the operative field, acting as a specialist for circulators, and being on call. For Bronson Lakeview Hospital and Bronson South Haven Hospital, RNs are responsible for completing the Workday CBL on "Swing beds." For the HDU Department, there are additional on-call requirements.
