About The Position

Utilizing the nursing process, this role is responsible for providing for immediate and long-term nursing care needs of patients within the standards of the department, hospital, and regulatory agencies. The position is located on the Bipolar & Psychotic Inpatient Unit (AB2), which specializes in first-break cases and focuses on symptom management and safety to ensure a therapeutic environment for stabilization.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse [RN - State License] - Generic - HR Only required.
  • MR safety certification.
  • Standard blood draw procedures (excluding IV placement). (Required).
  • Ability to work as part of a team. (Required).
  • All employees must possess basic computer skills to use a variety of electronic or online systems for communication, clinical and administrative purposes. (Required).
  • Nursing required or Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred.
  • No experience required; one year medical/psychiatric experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately assesses patients’ needs, utilizing multiple data sources to determine actual/potential health problems and functional status, and identifying patient strengths using a Recovery Oriented Framework.
  • Performs point of care testing and communicates findings effectively to members of the healthcare team.
  • Documents patient responses to interventions and demonstrates an understanding of patients’ response to treatment interventions.
  • Identifies patient behaviors that contribute to the development of a crisis and utilizes non-verbal and verbal techniques to de-escalate a crisis situation.
  • Accurately plans nursing interventions for assigned patients, modifying and individualizing the Nursing Plan of Care and protocols.
  • Participates in the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan and demonstrates the ability to prioritize patient care needs.
  • Partners with patients/families to support recovery goals.
  • Provides and implements nursing care interventions, establishing a therapeutic alliance with assigned patients.
  • Demonstrates safe, accurate, and timely medication administration using BMV scanning and reviews physician orders in a timely manner.
  • Promotes interventions that provide the least-restrictive alternatives and recovery-oriented goals, and participates in leading patient groups.
  • Accurately evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care interventions, documenting response to intervention and communicating patients’ clinical status at clinical team rounds and change of shift reports.
  • Utilizes evidence-based nursing knowledge to guide practice decisions.
  • Provides a leadership role in organizing and providing patient care, including direction and supervision of MHSs, delegating care interventions, and assuming a leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Promotes/provides for critical incident de-briefing following emergency events and anticipates acute milieu problems, delegating staff appropriately.
  • Participates in the training and education of RNs, MHSs, and other healthcare providers.
  • Provides for teaching needs of patient and significant others, including health teaching related to patient needs and recovery goals, documenting teaching in the patient’s record, and informing the treatment team of learning needs.
  • Maintains a commitment to professional growth and competency by completing mandatory in-service requirements, maintaining competency for treating the patient population, seeking constructive feedback, and identifying strengths and areas for development with a supervisor.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication, maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality, communicating positively and courteously, and presenting self in a professional manner.
  • Contributes to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the hospital, department, and unit through effective time management and economical management of services and supplies, and notifying shift coordinator/charge nurse of availability for additional assignments.
