About The Position

The Pre/Post-Operative Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for the patient’s admission to the facility, comprehensive pre-operative care, immediate post-operative care, and stabilization for admission to the inpatient department or return to the home environment. This role involves utilizing specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while giving direct and indirect patient care, acting under established protocols, policies, and provider orders. The RN maintains patient privacy and confidentiality, oversees patient's pre-operative and/or postoperative care considering both physical and psychosocial needs, and continually performs thorough and accurate patient assessment, anticipating needs and reporting relevant assessments to the appropriate provider. The position also ensures completion and availability of requested preoperative testing, reports abnormal results, and documents assessments and care accurately and in a timely manner. Patient and family education on perioperative procedures and expectations is a key component, as is ensuring patients have met all necessary requirements prior to transferring them to the operating room. The RN optimizes patients for discharge or transfer to an inpatient unit, providing holistic and thorough discharge education and/or report. Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for patients in the perioperative setting based on individualized needs, with a strong nursing knowledge base and rationale for actions. This includes skills such as initiation and maintenance of vascular access, procedural sedation, cardiac and vital sign monitoring, assistance with peripheral nerve blocks, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, medication reconciliation, airway management, medication administration, and repositioning/comfort measures. The role also involves specimen handling, maintaining departmental cleanliness and order, demonstrating safe operation of equipment, and utilizing supplies safely, effectively, and efficiently. Patient, self, and other safety is a primary concern, with quick and efficient response to emergency situations. The RN supervises and directs non-professional personnel as delegated and performs other related duties as assigned. Functioning effectively as a team member involves timely reporting for work, maintaining good attendance, showing flexibility in accommodating schedule changes, and participating in patient care planning and implementation. The RN takes responsibility for an adequate patient load, reviews the schedule for the next day, and responds to call backs professionally. Work time is utilized effectively, and the RN monitors the surgery schedule, communicating arrivals, cancellations, and delays, and liaising with the reception desk, patients, or surgeons. Pertinent information is reported to the supervisor, and the RN contributes to increased morale and a positive attitude. Minimal supervision is required for daily tasks. Supporting quality activities includes participating in committees and educational programs, making post-operative phone calls to assess patient status, and reporting pertinent information. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are utilized, with suggestions for improvement made. Daily assignments, including general housekeeping and maintenance of the work environment, are performed and documented. Communication skills are developed to promote inter-departmental relationships and ensure continuity of care. Active participation in patient and employee safety by following OSHA and other standards is expected, along with maintaining current BLS and ACLS certifications.

Requirements

• Associate’s degree from an accredited two-year college or university, or diploma in nursing.
• Possession of valid state license as Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas.
• Current BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) required.
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required within 60 days of hire.
• Minimum of one-year experience in Preop, PACU, Emergency, or ICU.

Nice To Haves

• BSN desired.
• One-year perioperative experience in surgery center or hospital setting preferred.
• (NOTE: BCLS may be obtained individually or will be accepted without individual BCLS card with current ACLS documentation.)

• Demonstrate continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for patients on the perioperative setting based on individualized needs.
• Demonstrate good nursing knowledge base and rationale for actions; demonstrate appropriate knowledge and competence of skills identified for position including, but not limited to: Initiation and maintenance of vascular access, Procedural sedation, Cardiac and vital sign monitoring, Assistance with peripheral nerve blocks, Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, Medication reconciliation, Airway management, Medication administration, Repositioning/comfort measures, Specimen Handling.
• Always maintain cleanliness and order of department.
• Demonstrate the safe operation of equipment and follow procedures for reporting and correcting damaged equipment and/or unsafe situations.
• Utilize supplies safely, effectively, and efficiently, assisting with stocking, replenishing, and preparation of supplies.
• Keep safety of patient, self, and others a primary concern always; recognize emergency situations and respond quickly and efficiently following hospital policies and procedures to prevent adverse outcomes.
• Supervise and direct, as delegated, the activities of non-professional personnel.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisors.
• Report for work in a timely manner and maintain good attendance record.
• Show flexibility in accommodating schedule changes, i.e. working late or early, changing schedules, etc.
• Participate as a team member in planning and implementation of patient care; take responsibility for an adequate patient load, review schedule for next day.
• Respond to call backs in a timely and professional manner.
• Utilize work time effectively.
• Monitor surgery schedule continually, communicating arrivals, cancellations, delays; communicate with reception desk, contact patients or surgeons who are late.
