About The Position

This Registered Nurse (RN) Permanent Charge position is located in the Emergency Department at Advocate Condell Medical Center. The role is part-time, requiring 24 hours per week, with shifts from 7 am to 7 pm, two days a week, and every third weekend. The position also includes 4 hours of call per month. The Emergency Department is a 45-bed unit and a Level 1 Trauma center. The role involves significant leadership responsibilities in addition to providing clinical care.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
  • ADN acceptable with agreement to enroll in BSN completion program in two years to be completed in five years
  • 2 years RN experience
  • 1 Year Charge Nurse Experience
  • Good communication skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Good time management and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with patient care equipment
  • Current RN License in state of practice
  • Current CPR
  • Certifications/education required for the nursing specialty - See Certification Addendum
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and different shifts
  • Ability to transport objects, patients, and equipment
  • Ability to respond quickly to patient needs and work at fast pace
  • Ability to assist in evacuation of patients in event of fire or other disaster
  • Routinely works with potentially infectious specimens and patients
  • Ability to respond to patients in a timely manner and access all areas of the unit
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns registered nurses and ancillary personnel to patient care activities and delegates tasks appropriately.
  • Provides peer accountability through coaching for problem-solving and quality improvement.
  • Manages patient/family concerns and complaints, and addresses patient delays.

  • Demonstrates positive attitude and professional behaviors as a representative of the department.
  • Reports unit issues and concerns to management in a timely manner.
  • Role models leadership behaviors and Advocate Behaviors of Excellence.
  • Provides leadership as an effective change agent, holding others accountable for standards.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other department leaders for quality patient care.
  • Performs other leadership duties as assigned.
  • Assists in the assessment of staff performance through peer review.
  • Addresses unit/staff issues and concerns, promoting problem-solving.
  • Assists in conflict resolution by communicating concerns to management.
  • Anticipates staffing needs based on census, acuity, and bed availability, collaborating with management.
  • Updates staffing changes and reviews staffing needs with management.
  • Coordinates support services to promote the environment of care.
  • Coordinates with Supply Chain and Logistics for resource management of supplies and equipment.
  • Directs patient throughput and workflows for a safe unit environment and patient satisfaction.
  • Assists unit management with productivity and staffing to meet budgetary targets while ensuring safe patient care.
  • Collaborates staffing with other Perianesthesia Departments.
  • Coordinates unit staffing to promote staff involvement in committees and educational opportunities.
  • Assists in coordinating patients to the Surgical Hold Unit and serves as a resource.
  • Ensures reporting of safety events or near misses.
  • Provides clinical care as outlined in the Registered Nurse Job Description.
  • Accountable for own professional development through learning activities.
  • Participates in departmental activities that improve patient care and unit operations.
  • Earns a minimum of 10 contact hours per year.
  • Demonstrates clinical leadership through involvement in committees/task forces.
