About The Position

This position focuses on the care of pediatric patients, recognizing that children have unique healthcare needs that require specialized knowledge and expertise. The Registered Nurse will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, participate in discharge planning, function as a patient advocate, and teach patients/families about illness/injury and overall health promotion and wellness. The role enhances quality of life from the perspective of the patient/family by documenting care provided and responding to incidents in accordance with established policies and procedures. The nurse will consult, confer, and collaborate with other health care providers, maintain and advance clinical competence, and participate on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects, as assigned. Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is part of the provincial implementation of minimum Nurse to Patient Ratios (mNPRs), an initiative aimed at enhancing nursing practice and strengthening quality of care across the health system. mNPRs set the minimum number of nurses providing care to patients on a given unit. Requirements

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Post graduate coursework or a certificate in pediatrics including courses in breastfeeding.
  • One (1) year recent related clinical experience working with a pediatric patient population, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to designated patient group.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement care plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust to unexpected events, problem-solve, establish priorities and deal with conflict.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to counsel and teach patients and their families.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership through initiative and problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated skill in clinical techniques and the use of applicable equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.
  • Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applications.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
