About The Position

The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) specializes in the care of critically ill pediatric patients across all specialties. The unit serves a diverse patient population, including medical, surgical, trauma, orthopedic, cardiac, neurological, and pulmonary. It is a designated unit for pediatric liver and kidney transplants and bone marrow transplants. The PICU cares for critical patients with congenital and complex, multi-organ problems requiring ongoing interventions. The PICU is located on the 3rd floor of the Mary Brigh building in the “C and F” wing or hallway. PICU RNs may float to other units as needed. The unit has 19 Acute beds and 4 Transplant beds. The PICU utilizes a family-centered care model and a multidisciplinary team approach with around-the-clock nursing observation, assessment, and interventions. The unit also has a pediatric transport team consisting of specially educated and trained RNs and respiratory therapists for transporting critically ill infants and children to and from Mayo Clinic. The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for coordinating nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care, supporting professional nursing practice across settings and the continuum of care. The RN functions within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, adhering to the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice. The RN provides leadership through preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. Delegation of patient care is based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. The RN possesses excellent communication skills, is skillful in mentoring and teaching, and may participate in committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as part of their role responsibilities. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, requiring state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a nursing program recognized by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA.
  • One year of RN experience required.
  • All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date of April 1, 2020, and after must provide documented evidence of program completion of the baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within five years from the last day of the month of the RN start date.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) must be valid for 90 days post start date; acceptable certifications include: American Heart Association (AHA)/ Heartcode® BLS, Military Training Network, Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers).
  • Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.

  • Prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.

Responsibilities
