About The Position

The RN Staff Nurse Outpatient is a clinically competent, licensed professional nurse who prescribes, delegates, and coordinates nursing care through assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The nurse interacts effectively with patients, significant others, and healthcare team members while maintaining professional nursing standards. The role uses critical thinking, therapeutic communication, and interpersonal relationship-building skills to improve team effectiveness, processes, and patient outcomes across the continuum of care. The nurse follows Northwestern Medicine’s mission, values, Code of Ethics, Corporate Compliance Program, policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory and accreditation standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing required for new hires after January 1, 2011.
• Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Illinois.
• One year of experience in a similar role.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification.
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, subject to the stated department and cost-center exceptions.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, subject to the stated department and cost-center exceptions.

• Three years of experience in a similar role.

Responsibilities

• Collect and analyze patient data; identify expected outcomes; develop and implement individualized plans of care; coordinate care delivery; and evaluate progress.
• Direct care and determine the appropriate use of assistants involved in direct patient care.
• Involve patients and families in their care, including teaching, continuity-of-care activities, and discharge planning.
• Perform patient care in a manner that optimizes safety and reduces the likelihood of medical or healthcare errors, incorporating National Patient Safety Goals.
• Assess and reassess pain, use appropriate pain-management techniques, and educate patients and families about pain management.
• Provide effective hand-offs to the next healthcare provider.
• Assume required on-call assignments.
