The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room (OR) is responsible for delivering patient care through the nursing process, encompassing assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome management during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical patient care. This role requires a graduate of an accredited school of nursing with a current Registered Nurse License and American Heart Association BLS certification. The nurse must demonstrate comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in accordance with recognized nursing standards, department policies, the Patient Bill of Rights, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act. Key responsibilities include assessing patients' physiological and psychosocial health status, managing pain, completing patient histories, communicating pertinent information for continuity of care, and accurately documenting patient records. The role involves identifying desired patient outcomes, establishing nursing diagnoses and mutually acceptable patient/family goals, and formulating and implementing nursing care plans tailored to individual needs. The nurse must be able to assess and problem-solve, respond to emergencies, and practice within legal and ethical guidelines. Specific OR duties include demonstrating proper preoperative processes, communication/report, surgical case counting and documentation, aseptic technique, efficient patient turnover, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, and anticipating surgeon's needs. Participation in a Professional Nursing Organization is also encouraged.
