The Registered Nurse - OR is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the framework of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis and patient outcome) in the preoperative, interoperative and postoperative phase of the surgical patient. This role requires current, comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in conformance with recognized nursing standards and department policies, including the Patient Bill of Rights and JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care and the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse will assess physiological and psychosocial health status, pain, and complete patient history. They will verbally report pertinent information, document legibly, assess understanding, identify desired patient outcomes, establish nursing diagnoses and goals, and formulate and implement nursing care plans. The role also involves responding to emergencies, practicing within legal and ethical guidelines, performing accountable nursing actions, and continually adjusting care plans. Specific skills include demonstrating proper preoperative process, surgical case counting, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, and anticipating surgeon's needs. Participation in a Professional Nursing Organization is also expected.
