About The Position

The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room (OR) is responsible for delivering patient care through the nursing process, encompassing assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome management during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical patient care. This role requires adherence to recognized nursing standards, department policies, the Patient Bill of Rights, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse will assess patients' physiological and psychosocial health status, including pain assessment, and complete patient histories. Effective communication and documentation are crucial, involving verbal reporting to appropriate staff for continuity of care and legible documentation in patient records. The role also involves assessing patient and family understanding of care, identifying desired patient outcomes, establishing nursing diagnoses, setting mutually acceptable patient/family goals, and formulating and implementing nursing care plans tailored to individual needs. The nurse must demonstrate the ability to assess and problem-solve, respond to emergencies, and practice within legal and ethical guidelines. Specific OR responsibilities include demonstrating proper preoperative processes, communication/reporting, surgical case counting and documentation, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, and anticipating surgeon's needs. Participation in a Professional Nursing Organization is also encouraged.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current Registered Nurse License
  • Current American Heart Assn. BLS certification

Responsibilities
