About The Position

This is a full-time Registered Nurse position in the Operating Room (OR). The role involves correlating clinical data with patient care, communicating effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams, and adhering to all facility policies and procedures. The nurse will be responsible for patient assessment, treatment, and care based on age-specific needs, and demonstrating competence in designated skills for an OR Circulator. Key duties include preparing supplies and equipment, reviewing medical records, maintaining patient normothermia, administering medications, verifying surgical sites and consents, providing patient instructions, completing nursing documentation, assembling supplies, conducting pre-operative interviews, practicing aseptic techniques, ensuring surgical site time-outs, positioning patients, applying necessary equipment, managing sponge, needle, and instrument counts, labeling specimens, reviewing physician preference cards, operating sterilizers, assisting physicians and anesthesia personnel, providing emergency care, and performing other assigned duties. The role also emphasizes fostering a positive and professional environment, diffusing conflict, accepting feedback, maintaining professional appearance, and demonstrating safe equipment operation.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Nursing from accredited nursing program
  • Current, unencumbered Texas RN License
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification at time of hire
  • Minimum of 2 year OR experience in an acute care facility

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing
  • CNOR certification
  • Previous OR experience in neuro-spine, spine and orthopedic joint specialty
  • Scrub experience or willingness to learn

Responsibilities

  • Correlates clinical data with patient’s medical and nursing care and set priorities.
  • Communicates well with patients, families, co-workers, physicians, other members of the healthcare team.
  • Adheres to all facility policies and procedures when providing patient care.
  • Demonstrates ability to direct and provide for patient care in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates continued competence in assessing, treating, and caring for individuals based upon age-specific needs utilizing a developmental perspective.
  • Demonstrates appropriate knowledge and competence of designated skills identified for OR Circulator position in patient care duties.
  • Checks updated schedule each morning and prepares supplies and equipment.
  • Completes review of medical record.
  • Maintains patient normothermia.
  • Promotes physical comfort, and provides emotional support and safety for patient.
  • Administers and documents medications as ordered by physician.
  • Verifies surgical/procedure site with patient, surgical schedule, and patient’s History and Physical.
  • Verifies and/or obtains signature on operative/procedure consent.
  • Provides instructions according to patient need.
  • Completes nursing documentation on each operative procedure
  • Assembles supplies for cases according to schedule and preference cards.
  • Completes thorough and efficient pre-operative patient interview.
  • Practices and monitors aseptic techniques.
  • Ensures that the surgical site time-out process is followed and completed.
  • Takes responsibility for positioning patient relevant to procedure with awareness of body alignment, circulation and pressure points.
  • Applies electrosurgical return electrodes, tourniquets, etc., according to physician preference, policies and procedures.
  • Is accountable for accuracy and documentation of sponge, needle and instrument counts.
  • Properly labels and cares for specimens.
  • Provides and records all intraoperative medications and obtains physician signature of administration of same.
  • Reviews and updates physician preference cards.
  • Has working knowledge of sterilizers.
  • Assists physician and anesthesia personnel as needed.
  • Provides emergency care according to physician and administrative policy.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by management.
