About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Operating Room (OR) is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process, encompassing assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome identification. This role covers the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical patient care. The nurse operates under the supervision of the Supervisor of Clinical Services and must adhere to recognized nursing standards, department policies, the Patient Bill of Rights, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Current Registered Nurse License
Current American Heart Assn. BLS certification
Current American Heart Assn. ACLS certification

Nice To Haves

One year OR experience
Ortho experience preferred
First Assist experience is a plus!

Responsibilities

Deliver patient care through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, patient outcome identification) in the preoperative, interoperative, and postoperative phases.
Assess physiological and psychosocial health status of patients.
Assess pain per policy.
Complete patient history.
Verbally report pertinent information to appropriate staff for continuity of care.
Legibly document information in patient records and sign using appropriate professional title.
Assess patient/family understanding and expectations of care.
Identify desired patient outcomes.
Establish nursing diagnoses.
Establish mutually acceptable patient/family goals.
Formulate a Plan of Care for the patient.
Implement nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs.
Assess and problem-solve effectively.
Respond to emergencies.
Practice within legal and ethical guidelines (Nurse Practice Act, legal statutes, ANA code for Nurses, PRMC Policy and Procedures).
Perform nursing actions demonstrating accountability, flexibility, and safe judgment.
Continually adjust care plan based on patient/family data.
Demonstrate proper preoperative process, including communication and report.
Demonstrate proper procedure and documentation for surgical case counting.
Demonstrate proper aseptic technique.
Demonstrate efficient turnover time.
Demonstrate proper technique for obtaining blood products.
Demonstrate proper patient identification verification per policy.
Demonstrate proper surgical site identification and marking per policy.
Anticipate surgeon’s needs during surgical procedures.
Participate in a Professional Nursing Organization.
