About The Position

The Registered Nurse - OR Circulator directs and/or provides professional perioperative nursing care for an assigned group of patients across the age continuum, utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This role involves providing supervision and guidance to other operating room staff and, in the absence of the Director of the Operating Room, may make decisions affecting the surgical suite's operation. The circulator serves as a professional and technical subject matter expert for at least two surgical services and is expected to float to other patient care areas (Pre-op, PACU) and the Central Sterile Department to enhance organizational efficiency. Shifts are assigned by the Department Head, with weekday, weekend, and holiday call assigned on a rotating basis. The role may require working past assigned shifts due to patient care needs and may include additional duties within the scope of practice, such as central sterile duties. The position is classified as Job Classification I under OSHA, involving direct contact with blood or other body fluids, requiring the use of provided personal protective equipment.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates eligibility for employment in the U.S.
  • Registered Nurse; Current licensure in the State of Texas
  • Must have BLS and renew every 2 years prior to expiration
  • ACLS and PALS required within 6 months of employment or sooner if covering call or conscious sedation and renew both every 2 years prior to expiration
  • Ability to relate and work effectively with others
  • Demonstrated skills in verbal and written English communications for safe and effective patient care and to meet documentation standards
  • Willingness to participate in goal-setting and educational activities for own professional advancement
  • Is aware of professional nursing standard and performs in accordance with them

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a perioperative nurse (CNOR) preferred
  • Previous experience as a perioperative nurse preferred but may receive on the job training here at TPCH

Responsibilities

  • Directs and/or provides professional perioperative nursing care for an assigned group of patients across the age continuum

  • Provides supervision and guidance to other members of the operating room staff
  • May be authorized, in the absence of the Director of the Operating Room, to make decisions affecting the operating of the surgical suite
  • Serves as a professional and technical subject matter expert for at least two surgical services
  • Demonstrates the abilities and willingness to float to other patient care areas (Pre-op, PACU) and Central Sterile Department to enhance organizational efficiency
  • Works shifts as assigned by the Department Head
  • Takes weekday, weekend and holiday call on a rotating basis
  • May occasionally work past assigned shift due to extenuating circumstances related to the care and safety of a patient(s)
  • May be assigned additional duties within scope of practice, including but not limited to central sterile duties
