About The Position

St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC) is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Operating Room on a PRN basis. This role involves assisting with diagnostic and/or interventional procedures or treatments, potentially including 24-hour coverage for emergency procedures as dictated by the on-call schedule. The nurse will demonstrate a working knowledge of all equipment, document patient data, and exhibit friendliness, helpfulness, and concern towards patients and visitors. This position requires providing assistance to physicians in a timely and helpful manner and maintaining cooperative relationships with colleagues, all in alignment with the values of St. Joseph Medical Center.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse accepted by Texas State Board of Nursing to engage in professional nursing.
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required.
  • Two years of Operating Room experience.
  • B.S., Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing.
  • Technical, clerical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills relevant to patient care/area.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

  • BSN or progression to this degree.
  • National Certification as recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
  • Bi or Multilingual.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with diagnostic and/or interventional procedures or treatments.
  • Provide 24-hour coverage for emergency procedures as dictated by the on-call schedule.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of all equipment used and document all pertinent patient data accordingly.
  • Demonstrate friendliness, helpfulness, and concern with patients and visitors.
  • Provide assistance to physicians in a helpful and timely manner.

  • Consistently follow patient care, and facility guidelines and procedures in performance.
  • Direct support personnel in implementing patient's plan of care, provide supervision and guidance, and evaluate effectiveness of the delegated tasks.
  • Collaborate with inter intraprofessional colleagues to ensure quality outcomes.
  • Complete annual education requirements.
  • Maintain competency, as evidenced by completion of competency validation requirements.
  • Promote a culture of patient safety which results in the identification and reduction of unsafe practices.
  • Use nursing process to provide all levels of patient care.
  • Use professional judgment and critical thinking to prepare, prioritize, and execute the patient's plan of care consistent with patient assessment data, physicians' treatment plans, and professional standards of care.
  • Implement measures to prevent exposure to infectious pathogens and communicable conditions.
  • Prepare sterile products to be introduced to the sterile field, utilizing sterile technique.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of supplies needed for specific procedures performed.
  • Perform surgical scrub and assist during the procedure.
  • Monitor and maintain physiologic parameters and patient safety.
  • Perform hand hygiene to prevent transmission of microbes in support of patient safety.
  • Provide call coverage for emergency procedures after scheduled cases and during the weekend on a rotating basis, using self-scheduling, as needed.
  • Respond to emergency calls as prescribed by guidelines and or policies.
  • Able to perform nursing function as deemed competent during an emergency procedure.
  • Prepare patient for procedures by collaborating within an interdisciplinary team to provide physical and emotional support during safe patient care.
  • Document all pertinent patient data and communicate with nursing personnel from various floors to report changes in patients' condition and procedures performed.
  • Maintain competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments.
  • Enhance the patient experience by fostering a positive relationship with customers.
  • Contribute to improving HCAHPS results.
  • Promote stewardship of hospital resources while ensuring quality patient care.
  • Other duties as assigned.
