About The Position

The Operating Room at University Medical Center has 21 operating rooms, including a hybrid suite specializing in endovascular surgery and equipped with robots for neurological surgeries. The department performs approximately 16,000 cases annually and employs over 250 staff members, making it one of the largest departments at UMC. The OR offers an extensive 6-month nursing orientation, tailored to previous experience, to develop highly skilled OR nurses. These nurses are trained in all aspects of the perioperative phase and collaborate closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical technologists, and ancillary staff. The Registered Professional Nurse assesses, implements or delegates, plans, and evaluates total nursing care, functioning in accordance with established philosophy. They provide and direct patient care, ensuring effective communication with other shifts and departments for optimal continuity of care. Nurses provide professional nursing care and supervise nursing staff, possessing experience in general nursing and knowledge of organizational and nursing policies, clinical and nursing standards, and practices. They demonstrate a special interest in scientific and technical activities and must show current knowledge and clinical competence in special skills required for quality patient care, including age-specific knowledge when necessary.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
  • Valid Texas RN License/Eligible Compact License
  • Must maintain a current BLS & ACLS certification from American Heart Association
  • BSN required or must earn within 3 years.
  • RN Experience Required

  • CNOR Certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, implements or delegates, plans, and evaluates total nursing care and functions in accordance with established philosophy.
  • Provides and directs patient care for a group of patients.
  • Relates effectively with other shifts/departments for optimal continuity of care.
  • Gives professional nursing care to patients and provides supervision and guidance to the members of the nursing staff at least 50% of the time.
  • Shows current knowledge and clinical competence of the special skills required to give quality care to patients on their unit.
  • Applies age specific knowledge when needed for appropriate patients’ care.
