About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) in Surgery is responsible for prescribing, delegating, and coordinating nursing care for patients within the perioperative environment. This includes performing interventions that assist patients whether they are in a conscious or unconscious state. The RN is tasked with identifying the physiologic, psychological, and sociologic needs of the patient, then developing and implementing an individualized plan of care. They coordinate interventions and evaluate the outcomes of the patient’s perioperative experience. The RN holds legal accountability and responsibility for patient care, regardless of whether it is performed personally or by another member of the perioperative team. The RN must be competent in providing patient care in adherence to the standards outlined in the Florida Nurse Practice Act, SMH policies, and departmental guidelines.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • One of the following: minimum of six (6) months previous Operating Room (OR) experience, or graduation from an OR post graduate course or approved Operating Room nurse internship program
  • Basic working knowledge of commonly used computer applications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or a diploma program
  • For new hires after 2012, Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing (BSN) is required within specified timeframe as outlined in the New Hire BSN Agreement policy (126.045)
  • BLS: Basic Life Support/CPR
  • FL RN: FL Registered Nurse License

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in nursing specialty area
  • BSN: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • ACLS: Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Responsibilities
