About The Position

Provide family-centered nursing care and education to antepartum, laboring, postpartum, maternal newborn couplets, and special care nursery patients/families. Provide perinatal and follow-up testing and visits. Directly supervises nursing assistants and unit secretary. Requires interpretation of fetal monitoring. Provides basic resuscitative care for newborns in the delivery room. Technical responsibilities include computer, Mobilab, and hearing screen.

Requirements

Minimum associate's degree in nursing.
Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of Indiana.
Strong customer service skills.
Effectively communicates both verbal and written.
Able to multi-task, prioritize, interpret and be assertive when necessary.
Able to perform basic nursing skills.
Able to use medical equipment, i.e. vital signs machine (temp, pulse, respiration, blood pressure), fetal monitors, and radiant warmers.
Able to operate basic office equipment.
Up-to-date on Neonatal Resuscitation certification.
Up-to-date on mock codes.
Up-to-date with fetal monitoring seminars as required.

Responsibilities

Uses only approved abbreviations.
Understands patient safety goals and actions taken.
Uses 2 patient identifiers before giving treatments, demonstrates process.
Understands read back of verbal orders/critical lab values and can state process.
Understands procedure to clarify physician orders.
Uses standing orders when indicated.
Accurately calls report to MD as warranted by condition; reports to other providers as needed.
Reports sentinel events or adverse drug reactions or incidents as warranted.
Uses final verification before invasive procedures and can verbalize correct process and documents in EHR.
Reassesses patient in response to changes in condition after intervention as needed and documents in EHR.
Communicates with and provides education to patients, caregivers, and family members in a timely manner (using respect and dignity when dealing with death and dying) and documents in EHR.
Documentation of fetal heart interpretation is accurate and timely.
Provides and documents patient and family teaching from time of admission throughout stay and documents every shift.
Provides family centered, couplet care.
Includes family in care and teaching.
Does not separate mother and baby unless medically necessary.
Assessments are complete and timely.
Communication is variance/problem focused and appropriate interventions taken.
Care plans are initiated, individualized, and updated.
Participates in follow-up calls, follow-up NB visits and preadmission phone calls.
Participates in outpatient visits, NST, OB checks, and injections.
If identified as triage nurse for the shift, will be the unit lead and manage unexpected influx of patients and the assignment per nurse.
Will communicate with MMH SPV, and lead resuscitations.
Follows protocol for Pitocin drip administration.
Follows standard of practice for pain management.
Appropriately documents administration of meds on eMAR using BMV.
Clarify orders with MD as needed.
Administers medications in a timely manner.
Performs 3-minute hand scrub prior to beginning each shift.
Enforces visitation guidelines per policy.
Performs responsibilities during Code Pink drills.
Fills out critiques for emergency c-sections, resuscitations, and transfers.
Knowledgeable in use of equipment.
Maintains equipment (cares for cables, etc.) and reports problems with equipment.
Attends monthly unit meetings and reads minutes of meetings.
Attends mandatory inservices and meetings.
Up-to-date with fetal monitoring seminars as required.
Completes monthly competency articles/tests.
Takes the initiative to increase knowledge and skills by reading, practicing with equipment.
Looks up diagnosis, treatments, and medications that you are not knowledgeable about.
Up-to-date on Neonatal Resuscitation certification.
Up-to-date on mock codes.
Completes projects and assignments accurately and timely.
Is productive during “downtime”.
Verifies, acknowledges, and signs off on orders timely and accurately.
Documentation is done “real time” at point of contact in patient room.
Physicians are notified of non-reassuring fetal heart tracing, variances, change in status; accurately and timely.
Verbal/telephone orders are “written, read back” and clarified.
Communicates pertinent information with manager in a timely manner.
Functions as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Can navigate efficiently through EHR to find necessary patient information.
