About The Position

The Registered Nurse- Birth Center is passionate about providing exceptional care to our patients and their families during labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery. This includes monitoring maternal and fetal health, administering medications, and assisting with deliveries. The RN-OB/L&D educates and supports mothers and families throughout the birthing process and collaborates with physicians, (Doula), and healthcare teams to ensure positive patient outcomes. This is supported by the highest quality nursing care, strong critical thinking, communication and organizational skills and emotional resilience. The RN-Birth Center delivers professional nursing care to patients within the hospital, using established Standards of Nursing Practice and RN Scope of Practice.

Requirements

  • Graduated of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current licensure in good standing in the state of practice (MN)
  • Evidence of BLS credential mandatory
  • BLS/ACLS required.
  • One year+ experience as an L&D or Postpartum nurse is required
  • Awareness of healthcare policies, regulations, and legal/ethical standards, including patients’ rights and privacy regulations ( i.e. HIPAA).
  • Familiarity with patient assessment techniques and the ability to interpret patient data.
  • Knowledge of developing and implementing patient centered care plans.
  • Understanding of infection control protocols and safety procedures.
  • Performing patient assessments, including monitoring vital signs and conducting physical examinations.
  • Administering medications safely and accurately, including dosage calculations.
  • Wound care, IV insertion, and other clinical procedures.
  • Basic life support and first aid.
  • Clearly and effectively communicating with patients, families, and the healthcare team, including explaining complex medical information in an understandable manner.
  • Developing effective solutions to patient problems and adapting to changing situations.
  • Supervising and delegating tasks to other nursing staff.
  • Adapting to changing patient conditions, workloads, and healthcare environments. Embracing new technologies and evolving healthcare.

  • Ability to respond quickly and decisively to emergency situations, while participating in shelter-in-place and disaster response protocols.
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams, communicating effectively with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Ability to demonstrate the knowledge and skills essential for providing care to specific patient populations.
  • Ability to lift, move, and position patients and equipment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), secure messaging applications, and collaborative tools (e.g.) Microsoft Teams, Google Workspace.
  • Proficient with Paycom and other Information Systems applicable to position.
  • Effectively utilize electronic health record (EHR) systems i.e. EPIC.
  • Apply logical problem-solving and decision-making skills in complex situations.
  • Make sound decisions in real time, often under pressure (early warning signs, inconsistencies, potential complications) using critical thinking.
  • Analyze data and scenarios to identify patterns, inconsistencies, and opportunities.

  • Understand and follow MMHC procedures for exposure control / blood borne and airborne pathogens.
  • Comply with all relevant MMHC policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory standards and requirements.
  • Wear proper identification while on duty.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all MMHC and patient information at all times.
  • Report to work on time and maintain defined standards for attendance.
  • Attend mandatory meetings.
  • Able to perform essential job duties that meet job performance expectations and organizational standards while upholding MMHC mission and values.

Nice To Haves

  • Current RN license, NRP, PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) preferred.
  • Previous experience in a Critical Access Hospital and knowledge of rural health challenges.

Responsibilities

  • Continuous monitoring of maternal vital signs, contractions, fetal heart rate, and progress during labor.
  • Guides mothers, administering pain relief (epidurals), assisting with interventions (forceps/vacuum), and preparing for childbirth.
  • Supports physicians/providers during vaginal and C-section deliveries, ensuring readiness for emergencies.
  • Cares for mother and baby immediately after birth, educating on newborn care, breastfeeding, and monitoring recovery.
  • Maintains accurate patient charts and medical records. Documents patient assessment findings, physical/psychosocial responses to nursing interventions and progress towards problem resolution and patient goals.
  • Prepares rooms and equipment, ensuring supplies for unexpected C-sections or emergencies are always ready.
  • Maintains confidentiality in matters related to patient, and family.
  • Provides care in non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to age appropriate, and patient and family’s diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity, and rights.
  • Reports patient condition to provider and health care team as appropriate during each shift.
  • Will delegate, supervise and assist in care provided by PCA’s/PCT’s, and CNA’s
  • Maintains competency in medical surgical nursing for all ages determined by the Clinical Educator, Inpatient Manager and CNO.
  • Successfully demonstrates professional nursing skills, competencies, and expected outcomes as required for a MMHC Registered Nurse.
  • Recognizes and responds to obstetric emergencies. Initiates emergency resuscitative measures according to pediatric and adult resuscitation protocols.
  • Provides emotional support and education to families on childbirth, postpartum recovery, and infant care.
  • Assist L&D Nurse as delegated in emergencies.
