About The Position

Under general supervision of the Medical Director and Neurology Nurse manager, guided by the policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services, and in collaboration with the physician staff, the Clinical Nurse (CN) performs established nursing procedures using clinical knowledge to care for patients in a case manager model of care. The nurse provides excellent clinical care, telephone advice, and patient education to the Neurology patients. The CN will comply with the Medical Center house and Telephone Standards. The CN is accountable for his/her own practice and has primary responsibility for utilizing nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe patient care in the outpatient clinical setting. S/he carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required and performs nursing care for patients with complex needs. CN is recognized as a leader and clinical resource and demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the practice and organization. CN serves as resource for all clinical staff and initiates and participates in patient and staff education. The Clinical Nurse must have the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks and work well with staff, patients, and providers. A high degree of independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy are necessary in dealing with faculty, staff, and patients in a complex environment. S/he works with physician leadership in setting and accomplishing annual goals. S/he works with staff to develop, monitor and maintain systems pertaining to all aspects of nursing care for the practice. The clinical nurse ensures a safe environment for patients and staff. The clinical nurse is responsible for providing direct nursing care to patients in the Clinic. Duties include but not limited to, triage of phone calls, completing the requested tasks in APeX messages, reconstitution of medications. The clinical nurse provides education to patients regarding their illnesses and education for procedure preparation and procedure related questions and education regarding patient medications. The nurse responds to patient questions regarding medication doses and side effects; he/she informs patients about normal/routine pathology and laboratory results, performs injections, teaching of injectable medications; facilitates completion of disability forms, work letters and will assist the faculty and staff in securing authorizations for tests and treatments.

Requirements

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
• Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
• Two (2) or more years of recent Ambulatory RN experience back-office setting
• Knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position
• Demonstrates evidence of basic analytic thinking necessary to care for a group of complex patients such as oncology and a high degree of attention to detail
• Must demonstrate observational skills and the ability to set priorities.
• Ability to function independently and effectively with shifting priorities and considerable pressure
• Must be able to function under stress and with strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Must demonstrate effective skills in applying hospital standards in area of service, team work, communication, respect for others, and time/priority management.
• Ability to delegate tasks in a style that is consistent with promoting leadership and teamwork, seeking assistance as needed; ability to demonstrate leadership experience that support teamwork, professionalism, high quality patient experience, evidence based clinical practice, or other relevant topics
• Demonstrates ability to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with physicians, nurses, and other medical staff.
• Contributes to team building through participation in unit programs and meetings; contributes to positive morale, using constructive and effective conflict resolution skills
• Demonstrates ability to remain current in professional and technical knowledge and apply this to the job; looks for opportunities for continual improvement in patient care, the work environment, and a commitment to lifelong learning in the field of nursing

Nice To Haves

• Three (3) or more years of adult Ambulatory Neurology experience
• Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse Certification or Ambulatory Care Nursing Certificate
• Membership in professional organizations is recommended
• BSN

Responsibilities

• Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care.
• Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision.
• Assists with the management of patient care administered by other members of the nursing team.
• Responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors.
• Carries out legal responsibilities within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act.
• Accountable to the Manager for overall work performance.
• Handles In-basket Management in EHR to include but not limited to patient questions, medication refills, and referral triages.
• Utilizes telephonic phone programs to receive and make patient and coordination work.
• Medication reconstitution and procedural assistance.
