The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Neonatal ICU is accountable for the coordination and delivery of nursing care across the continuum, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and care transitions. RNs practice within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and are responsible for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all aspects of care. This role supports care across Mayo Clinic’s NICU environments, including a Level III NICU (Eisenberg 35) which is a 24-bed, family-centered unit with 21 private rooms focusing on premature and medically complex infants requiring specialized ICU care, and includes an Integrated Neonatal High-Risk Delivery Team supporting delivery resuscitation and stabilization. It also supports a Level IV NICU (Mary Brigh 3B & Transport Team), a state-of-the-art unit caring for the most critically ill neonates with surgical, cardiac, and multisystem conditions, and features a specialized Neonatal Transport Team for regional transfers. Both areas operate within a closed staffing model, adjusting schedules based on patient volume and acuity. Care provided spans a wide acuity range, including premature infants (moderate to extremely premature), infants requiring respiratory support (CPAP, BiPAP, ventilation, high-flow), nutritional support (breastfeeding, bottle feeding, tube feeding, TPN), observation and medical management of neonatal conditions, and advanced therapies including surgical care, therapeutic hypothermia, and dialysis (Level IV). The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role. For New Graduate Nurses, applications should be submitted through the Nurse Residency Program posting. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship will require state licensure and completion of the VisaScreen or equivalent certification.
