The Registered Nurse - Mental Health/Psychiatric provides both direct and indirect nursing care by conducting assessments, determining priorities, and identifying nursing measures and therapeutic objectives. This role is responsible for utilizing the nursing process and an interdisciplinary approach to offer direct, continuous, and comprehensive patient care in the field of Psychiatry. The Psych RN performs ADL assistance for patients, administers medications and IV therapies, assesses patients, and plans appropriate nursing care. Documentation of the plan of care and care provided in the patient's medical record is a key responsibility. The role involves verifying transcriptions of physician's orders, executing and documenting prescribed orders, communicating pertinent patient data, reassessing patient conditions, and revising care plans. The RN in Psychiatry is also responsible for recognizing and initiating appropriate measures in emergencies, assisting with surgical/diagnostic procedures, providing patient/family education, caring for patients with various catheters and prostheses, conducting skin assessments, and participating in discharge planning.
