About The Position

The Registered Nurse - Mental Health/Psychiatric provides both direct and indirect nursing care by conducting assessments, determining priorities, and identifying nursing measures and therapeutic objectives. This role is responsible for utilizing the nursing process and an interdisciplinary approach to offer direct, continuous, and comprehensive patient care in the field of Psychiatry. The Psych RN performs ADL assistance for patients, administers medications and IV therapies, assesses patients, and plans appropriate nursing care. Documentation of the plan of care and care provided in the patient's medical record is a key responsibility. The role involves verifying transcriptions of physician's orders, executing and documenting prescribed orders, communicating pertinent patient data, reassessing patient conditions, and revising care plans. The RN in Psychiatry is also responsible for recognizing and initiating appropriate measures in emergencies, assisting with surgical/diagnostic procedures, providing patient/family education, caring for patients with various catheters and prostheses, conducting skin assessments, and participating in discharge planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
  • At least one full year of professional nursing experience.
  • A minimum of 24 months (2 years) experience in a Mental Health environment during the last 36 months.
  • A current, valid, unrestricted nursing license in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as approved by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Evidence of current immunizations.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting assessments, determining priorities, and identifying nursing measures and therapeutic objectives.
  • Utilizing the nursing process and an interdisciplinary approach to offer direct, continuous, and comprehensive patient care in the field of Psychiatry.
  • Performing nursing functions related to physician-prescribed treatments, including scrub nursing and circulating nursing during procedures.
  • Performing ADL assistance for patients.
  • Administering medications and IV therapies in adherence to local facility policies.
  • Making an assessment of patients and planning of appropriate nursing care.
  • Documentation of the plan of care and care provided in the patient's medical record.
  • Verifying transcriptions of physician's orders, along with the execution and documentation of prescribed orders.
  • Effective communication of pertinent patient data to charge nurses or physicians.
  • Reassessment of patient conditions, and revision of care plans based on identified nursing problems.
  • Recognizing and initiating appropriate measures in emergencies.
  • Assisting with surgical/diagnostic procedures.
  • Providing patient/family education.
  • Caring for patients with various catheters and prostheses.
  • Conducting skin assessments.
  • Participating in discharge planning.
