About The Position

We have a new opening for a Registered Nurse - Lactation Consultant at Nellis AFB in North Las Vegas, NV. This role involves collaborating with healthcare professionals to provide patient care, ensuring compliance with standards, performing physical exams, providing health promotions and counseling, administering medications and wound care, and coordinating care with other healthcare professionals. The position requires assessing patient needs, recognizing adverse signs, communicating effectively with diverse groups, making referrals, conducting research, and performing comprehensive lactation assessments for mothers and infants. The nurse will provide care to perinatal mothers, assess for normal/abnormal anatomy related to breastfeeding, create a learning environment for staff, conduct bedside lactation rounds, and integrate various aspects of breastfeeding into practice. The role also involves acting as an advocate for breastfeeding in the community and healthcare settings, maintaining client records, consulting with mothers experiencing breastfeeding difficulties, referring for breast pump rentals, and planning/teaching in-service education for maternity nursing staff. The nurse will deliver lactation management services to both inpatient and outpatient breastfeeding patients, conduct quality assurance programs, and document all activity accurately in electronic medical records. Responsibilities include receiving inpatient reports, being reachable via cell phone, leading the facility's Breastfeeding Task Force, rounding on inpatient mothers, responding to staff and patient needs, and maintaining a spreadsheet for tracking breastfeeding statistics.

Requirements

  • Possess a Bachelors degree in Nursing from a college or university accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC), or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • A minimum of 3-years of post-grad relevant experience as a registered nurse.
  • Possess current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Healthcare Provider certifications.
  • Current, full, active and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse from any state.
  • Possess a current AHA OR ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
  • Ability to submit to a background check and pre-employment drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals in the provision of patient care.
  • Facilitate the achievement of optimal outcomes in relation to clinical care, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with standards of care and practice in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Perform physical exam and health assessments.
  • Provide health promotions, counseling, and education.
  • Administer medications, wound care, and numerous other personalized care interventions.
  • Coordinate care with other healthcare professionals.
  • Meet with all patients based on the unit to assess their needs and document form of feeding/risks/benefits.
  • Recognize adverse signs and symptoms and react quickly in emergencies.
  • Communicate and collaborate with a diverse group of people for the purpose of informing the healthcare team of plans/actions, for teaching/education to benefit the patient/family and organization.
  • Make referral appointments and arrange specialty care as needed.
  • Conduct research in support of improved practice and patient outcomes.
  • Perform comprehensive lactation assessment of the mother and her infant within the hospital setting in accordance with the policy and guidelines of postpartum and newborn nursery care required for Government beneficiaries.
  • Provide comprehensive care to the perinatal mother desiring to breastfeed.
  • Assess mothers and newborns for normal/abnormal anatomy to determine ability to breastfeed.
  • Create a social environment that promotes learning for staff and patients.
  • Conduct bedside lactation rounds.
  • Integrate cultural, psychosocial, nutritional, and pharmacological aspects of breastfeeding into lactation consultant practice.
  • Act as an advocate for breastfeeding in the community, workplace, and within the health care professions.
  • Maintain comprehensive client records.
  • Consult with mothers having breastfeeding difficulties.
  • Participate appropriately in communication and decision-making activities within the Birthing Center and Pediatric Clinic.
  • Refer breastfeeding mothers for breast pump rentals and supplies.
  • Plan, teach, and conduct in-service education for maternity nursing staff.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver lactation management services to all breastfeeding patients, both in-patient and out-patient.
  • Conduct quality assurance programs to monitor the caliber of lactation services.
  • Effectively use appropriate communication format in addressing professional issues.
  • Use excellent written communication skills to perform accurate documentation, both written and electronic, of all activity in accordance with requirements.
  • Upon arrival, receive inpatient report from charge nurse to review patients that need lactation consultation from deliveries during the night and if there were difficulties during the night with breastfeeding.
  • Be reachable throughout the shift via assigned cell phone.
  • Lead the facility's Breastfeeding Task Force (including breastfeeding week).
  • Round on every inpatient breast mother at least once a day.
  • Respond to staff and patient needs throughout the shift for lactation consultations.
  • Act as an advocate for breastfeeding in the Nellis AFB community, Mike O'Callaghan Military Medical Center, and its health care system.
  • Document in patient's comprehensive medical records electronically to ensure continuity of care easily reviewed by providers and nursing staff, including both inpatient and outpatient record systems.
  • Consult with mothers and infants having breastfeeding difficulties both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Ensure patients receive a prescription from providers for breast pump reimbursement.
  • Conduct chart audits on inpatient and outpatient charts to monitor breastfeeding statistics.
  • Keep a running spreadsheet for tracking and report monthly to the Breastfeeding Task Force.
