About The Position

The Metro Boston Mental Health Unit at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital seeks a compassionate, skilled Registered Nurse IV to become part of a dynamic nursing team. The selected candidate will provide and supervise the provision of direct nursing care and treatment to people served on DMH Continuing Care Units by participating as a member of the multi-disciplinary team, assessing health care and educational needs of patients and their families, assisting in admission and discharge of patients, facilitating milieu groups and supervising assigned staff. Performs related duties as required. Please note: This is a full-time (40hr/week) Morning shift position. 6:45am-3:15pm with alternating weekends off. Week 1: Tues/Sat, Week 2:Sun/Fri. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime.

Requirements

  • Capacity to maintain a calm manner in stressful and/or emergency situations.
  • Considerable knowledge of adult learning theories, practices, and trends in nursing.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and determining nursing staff members’ training needs and providing or arranging for such trainings.
  • Ability to develop and implement training curriculum as well as plan and conduct training in a professional setting.
  • Ability to effectively utilize nursing process in problem solving situations.
  • Capacity to set a positive working climate and to establish and maintain effective, productive working relationships with others.
  • Ability to organize, manage, supervise and coach others in the provision of quality patient care including management of patient care unit.
  • Power to function independently and within a team with minimal supervision, demonstrating excellent judgment and attention to process and detail.
  • At least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual or multilingual fluency.
  • 3+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Prior charge nurse experience.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission standards and other regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of DMH regulations and hospital licensing standards.
  • Ability to utilize the Commonwealth’s Learning Management System
  • Willingness to travel for job-related purposes.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts and/or irregular hours (i.e. weekends, holidays, nights) related to the Nursing Educator duties.

Responsibilities

  • Provides nursing care to adult psychiatric patients by assessing their health and mental health status, recording related data (including entering patient information into the DPH Meditech medical record), administering treatment and medications
  • Establishes a rapport with all patients, evaluating patients’ responses, and in conjunction with other team members, adjusting their care in order to ensure the daily needs, dignity and human rights of the patients are met, therefore facilitating a speedy recovery.
  • Assists with patient admissions by collecting data, assessing learning needs, and participating in treatment planning with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Assists with the coordination and implementation of patients’ individual treatment plans, as determined by a multidisciplinary team, by conferring with appropriate mental health professionals in the hospital to ensure that treatment plans are carried out as intended.
  • Practices principles of Safety, Hope and Healing, including prevention, trauma-informed care, de-escalation and restraint/seclusion only when necessary to provide a safe environment. Assists patients in reviewing and revising their Individual Crisis Plans (ICPP) and brings recommended changes to the Treatment Team.
  • Serves as a role model for staff at all times, by taking initiative in meeting patient needs, demonstrating professionalism and respect in all interactions and working collaboratively with all colleagues.
  • Investigates complaints by patients and others regarding such matters as methods of treatment, room assignments, etc., and attempts to resolve such complaints to promote patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Supervises and provides leadership to nursing staff by utilizing professional standards of practice to ensure that patients receive appropriate care and treatment
  • Evaluates the capabilities of subordinates to provide a safe and therapeutic environment, provides assistance to staff in improving their skills and abilities and completes formal employee evaluations (EPRS) in a timely manner
  • Actively supports the goals and mission of the organization and assigned unit by discussing strategies for achieving these goals with the Nurse Manager, and serving as a role model for coworkers, promoting the psychiatric rehabilitation model of treatment, and actively participating organizational committees.
  • Performs other appropriate nursing duties as assigned.
