About The Position

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Department of Public Health, is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) III to join our multidisciplinary health care team. In this role, the RN III is responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating, coordinating, providing, and enhancing acute and specialized chronic nursing care in accordance with established policies and procedures. The incumbent closely monitors patients undergoing specialized diagnostic procedures within the Radiology Department and provides skilled support in the ambulatory care clinic, ensuring safe, high‑quality patient care across settings.

Requirements

  • Demonstrates knowledge of standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, and techniques, including emergency medical procedures (CPR, tourniquet application), surgical assistance techniques, and proper methods for collecting and transporting laboratory specimens.
  • Produces accurate clinical documentation by preparing statistical reports, charts, graphs, tables, and maintaining complete and precise records.
  • Communicates effectively by delivering and interpreting clear written and oral instructions, and by explaining applicable laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards governing agency and unit operations.
  • Builds and sustains positive working relationships, interacts professionally with individuals under physical or emotional stress, and engages respectfully with people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
  • Encourages and motivates patients to participate in individualized treatment plans, demonstrating strong interpersonal and patient‑centered care skills.
  • Applies effective problem‑solving techniques and sound judgment in clinical and operational situations.
  • Executes supervisory responsibilities by planning and assigning work, evaluating employee performance, identifying training needs, and recommending or initiating disciplinary action as appropriate.
  • One year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility.
  • Six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides and oversees high‑quality nursing care for diverse patient populations from community and state agencies, collaborating with the Ambulatory Care Nurse Manager, Radiology Manager, and interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Performs comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments for patients undergoing radiologic procedures, conducts ongoing evaluations of patient status and treatment response, and communicates changes in the plan of care to patients, families, and the health care team.
  • Ensures continuity and safety of care by adhering to hospital and nursing Hand‑Off Communication policies, implementing evidence‑based nursing interventions, and maintaining compliance with Joint Commission standards and state/federal regulations.
  • Accurately transcribes provider orders; administers and documents medications; monitors for therapeutic effects and adverse reactions; performs medication reconciliation; and communicates findings to the care team.
  • Performs clinical procedures including phlebotomy, IV insertion, catheterization for voiding cystograms, administration of contrast materials, and monitoring of patients during radiologic and invasive procedures.
  • Assists radiologists and clinicians during CT‑guided and ultrasound‑guided procedures, ensuring proper preparation, patient support, and adherence to procedural protocols.
  • Coordinates with external facilities to confirm patient readiness for scheduled procedures, ensures required laboratory testing is completed, and maintains proper handling and documentation of all specimens.
  • Utilizes the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) to document care, retrieve lab results and imaging, manage clinical correspondence, and prepare for clinic sessions by reviewing consultations and relevant patient information.
  • Provides patient and family education to support understanding of health status, promote healthy behaviors, and improve outcomes, ensuring care is culturally competent and age‑appropriate.
  • Participates in departmental and hospital‑wide performance improvement, risk‑management, safety, and infection‑control initiatives, contributing to data collection, analysis, and implementation of improvement strategies.
  • Supports departmental efficiency and safety by maintaining equipment, supplies, and pharmaceutical stock; reducing environmental hazards; and providing care to employees in the Employee Health Office when needed.
