About The Position

The Massachusetts Mental Health Center is seeking a talented and experienced Registered Nurse III to join our diverse team of mental health providers at our thriving state operated community mental health center dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality mental health services to the residents of the Commonwealth. The responsibilities of this role encompass providing direct nursing care services such as medication administration, nursing assessments, treatment planning, psycho-social support, individual, group, and family consultation, as well as crisis intervention to promote the highest level of functioning within the community while aiming for the least restrictive environment. Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, participating in interdisciplinary clinical teams, and ensuring meticulous documentation and record-keeping are also integral parts of the position. Additionally, overseeing the clinical aspects of nursing-related services falls under the purview of this role.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Capacity to perform basic mathematics.
  • Proven ability to gather information through observing and questioning individuals.
  • Talent for communicating effectively in oral expression, writing clearly and concisely, and developing ideas in logical sequence.
  • Skilled in interacting with people who are under emotional stress with the ability to maintain a calm manner in stressful or emergency situations.
  • One year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility.
  • Six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.

  • Experience working with individuals with serious, persistent mental illness, substance abuse and/or who have experienced homelessness.
  • Bilingual or multilingual fluency.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct nursing care to clients, including but not limited to injection administration, medication distribution, taking vital signs, nursing assessments and comprehensive metabolic screenings.
  • Follows all relevant medication administration and monitoring protocols.
  • Schedules all necessary follow up appointments.
  • Submits billing encounter form for each clinical encounter on the day of service provision and demonstrates understanding of all billable services.
  • Updates lab ordering system and notifies medical records departments of any changes in insurance or demographic status.
  • Assists prescribers by facilitating/processing medication refill requests received from patients, community providers, or pharmacies.
  • Provides clinical documentation to insurers to obtain prior authorization/approval for medications/treatment as needed.
  • Responsible for outreach and engagement efforts with persons served in the clinics to help ensure medication adherence and monitoring.
  • Provides patient education to encourage medication adherence, inform of possible side effects of medication and medication interactions, as well as leading and co-leading a wide range of wellness focused, recovery-oriented groups.
  • Provides direct supervision of nursing staff. Plans and assigns nursing duties according to the nature of the activity to be accomplished utilizing the principles and practices of supervision by evaluating the capabilities of subordinates (and available resources) to provide a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Evaluates the capabilities of subordinates to provide a safe and therapeutic environment, provides assistance to staff in improving their skills and abilities and completes formal employee evaluations (EPRS) in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to direct, teach, delegate and supervise outcomes of that delegation.
  • Evaluates nursing activities by reviewing patient medical records and by observing nursing care to ensure that nursing care is carried out as directed, and that treatments and medications are administered in accordance with physician orders.
  • Actively supports the goals and mission of the Center by discussing strategies for achieving these goals with the Nurse Manager, and serving as a role model for coworkers, promoting the psychiatric rehabilitation model of treatment, and actively participating organizational committees.
  • Uses data analysis to determine resources needs of the patients and clinic.
  • Collaborates with other providers (internal and external) to insure timely access for DMH clients.
  • Ensures that all medical records are maintained and remain current for all clinic clients.
  • Takes initiative in meeting patient needs, demonstrating professionalism and respect in all interactions and working collaboratively with all colleagues.
  • Utilizes professional standards of practice to ensure that patients receive appropriate care and treatment.
  • Ensures that treatments and medications are administered in accordance with physician orders.
  • Participates in organized meetings and in team building to ensure total patient care needs are met, and to establish good working relationships.
  • Actively supports the goals and mission of the Center and promotes the psychiatric rehabilitation model of treatment.
