About The Position

This position involves directing and participating in daily nursing care activities for adult and geriatric Veteran patients. The role provides direction and overall delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse resident veteran population. The Registered Nurse III- Evening Supervisor will assess, plan, and evaluate nursing care and veteran/family progress towards goals while guiding staff as needed. This role fosters high standards of resident care through diligent orientation and continuing education efforts of staff, emphasizing best practices, teamwork, and professional development. The Evening Supervisor assumes administration and supervision of the 2nd shift nursing units, personnel, and the quality of care provided.

Requirements

  • At least one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility.
  • Six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.
  • Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
  • Knowledge of the principles and age specific practices of nursing.
  • Knowledge of standard nursing policies, procedures, methods, and techniques, including safe administration of medications.
  • Knowledge of Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI), including MOS/Raps process and Interdisciplinary Team approach to care planning.
  • Knowledge of problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to establish rapport and deal tactfully with persons of varied ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of Veteran medical information.
  • Ability to give and follow written and oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as physician's orders and treatment plans.
  • Ability to gather information through observing and questioning individuals, and by examining records and documents.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Ability to operate as a team player and work independently.
  • Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts and/or irregular hours (i.e., weekends, holidays, nights).

Nice To Haves

  • Dementia Certification preferred.
  • Will be required to float to various nursing units of the Veteran facility as needed.
  • Will be required to rotate shifts as needed.
  • Will be required to work every other weekend, and to work holidays as needed.
  • Will be to work with residents who may be assaultive, have abusive behavior or age-related conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, plans and evaluates nursing care and Veteran progress towards goals, directing staff as needed.
  • Maintains own competence and serves as a clinical resource and expert role model to staff.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary team process to integrate nursing into a coordinated plan of care with all other support services.
  • Assures that Veteran care goals are mutually established with Veterans, families & staff.
  • Develops systems for the evaluation of Veteran care delivered in relation to the Veteran care required, such as on-going medical record review, report findings, actions and follow-up through the Quality Improvement process.
  • Interacts with appropriate management personnel regarding Veteran care and related issues.
  • Member of appropriate clinical committees to support Veteran care.
  • Promotes teamwork with all staff assigned to shift.
  • Plans for optimal utilization of staff for the delivery of nursing care throughout the 24 hour/7 day a week period.
  • Monitors activities of the shift staff; holds staff accountable for own clinical practice, including use of nursing process and appropriate documentation to meet all regulatory body standards.
  • Assures staff knowledge and integration of age-specific nursing of the Veteran population as a critical element in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources within facility to identify and provide education, technical or information services needed to staff or Veterans.
  • Completes employee performance appraisals (EPRS) on direct reporting staff.
  • Assists the Home’s on shift fiscally by collaborating with the DON maintaining accountability for approved Personnel, supplies and expense budget.
  • Maintains a safe environment for Veterans, staff members and visitors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
