UMMC Midtown Campus, one of two campuses of the University of Maryland Medical Center, is a 180-bed community teaching hospital located in Baltimore City. It has a long history of serving the community and focuses on helping patients manage chronic diseases. The Registered Nurse II (CN-II) is a vital member of the healthcare team, responsible for providing direct nursing care to patients within their assigned unit. This role involves managing the nursing process from admission to discharge, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, delegating tasks to support staff, and directing patient care to meet all needs. The CN-II is expected to exercise sound judgment in patient care and staff management, foster teamwork, and stay current with nursing standards and best practices through continuing education. The nurse's actions and attitudes should align with the hospital's mission and core values. Additionally, the CN-II must demonstrate proficiency as a charge nurse and/or a preceptor for new staff members. This includes the ability to demonstrate, document, and teach others about critical areas such as core measures, restraints, falls, wound care, pain management, customer service, National Patient Safety Goals, critical values, patient teaching, and suicide assessment. The nurse must competently delegate to and supervise personnel, integrating technical skills with the biopsychosocial aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills are essential for problem-solving and managing groups of patients. The nurse should seek assistance when needed and comply with the Maryland Practice Act. They must understand patient safety goals, quality performance measures, and patient education, ensuring best practices and collaborating with other disciplines. Issues that cannot be resolved at the unit level should be brought to supervisory staff. Participation in service-wide committees, task forces, or planning committees is expected to support the goals and mission of nursing services and the broader medical system. The nurse should anticipate patient needs, provide outstanding customer service, and serve as a role model for the unit.
