About The Position

UMMC Midtown Campus, one of two campuses of the University of Maryland Medical Center, is a 180-bed community teaching hospital located in Baltimore City. It has a long history of serving the community and focuses on helping patients manage chronic diseases. The Registered Nurse II (CN-II) is a vital member of the healthcare team, responsible for providing direct nursing care to patients within their assigned unit. This role involves managing the nursing process from admission to discharge, collaborating with other healthcare professionals, delegating tasks to support staff, and directing patient care to meet all needs. The CN-II is expected to exercise sound judgment in patient care and staff management, foster teamwork, and stay current with nursing standards and best practices through continuing education. The nurse's actions and attitudes should align with the hospital's mission and core values. Additionally, the CN-II must demonstrate proficiency as a charge nurse and/or a preceptor for new staff members. This includes the ability to demonstrate, document, and teach others about critical areas such as core measures, restraints, falls, wound care, pain management, customer service, National Patient Safety Goals, critical values, patient teaching, and suicide assessment. The nurse must competently delegate to and supervise personnel, integrating technical skills with the biopsychosocial aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills are essential for problem-solving and managing groups of patients. The nurse should seek assistance when needed and comply with the Maryland Practice Act. They must understand patient safety goals, quality performance measures, and patient education, ensuring best practices and collaborating with other disciplines. Issues that cannot be resolved at the unit level should be brought to supervisory staff. Participation in service-wide committees, task forces, or planning committees is expected to support the goals and mission of nursing services and the broader medical system. The nurse should anticipate patient needs, provide outstanding customer service, and serve as a role model for the unit.

Requirements

  • RN license for the state of Maryland
  • One year of solid nursing experience
  • Current BLS certification
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required
  • One-year nursing experience.
  • Solid knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education every two years.
  • Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred
  • Member of a professional organization.
  • ACLS provider completion within 1 year of employment in the following departments: ICU/IMC, PACU, Interventional Radiology, GI Lab, and ED.
  • PALS completion within 1 year of employment in the following departments: PACU and Emergency Department.

Responsibilities

  • Understand and follow policies and protocols and help others with using these resources effectively.
  • Be attentive to addressing patient needs in relation to quality measures, National Patient Safety Goals, and patient education.
  • Function as charge nurse and/or preceptor.
  • Work with supervisor to resolve issues at the unit level.
  • Perform assessments and reassessments, as appropriate for the patient’s needs, collecting data from all sources to assist with formulating a nursing diagnosis.
  • Develop an individualized Plan of Care, based on the patient’s assessment, with mutual, realistic and measurable goals and documents this thoroughly in the patient’s record.
  • Coordinate and direct available resources and personnel in developing and following the Plan of Care.
  • Perform treatments, including medication administration, as ordered by the physician and carry out nursing interventions in accordance with the Plan of Care.
  • Evaluate the patient’s response to treatments/interventions through reassessment and revise the Plan of Care as necessary.
  • Document assessments and reassessments, thoroughly, accurately and on time.
  • Document any changes to the Plan of Care and communicates these changes to team members.
  • Document treatments/interventions including medication administration thoroughly and per hospital policy.
  • Assess patient’s teaching needs, and plans patient education accordingly.
  • Complete patient and family teaching, assess understanding and document accordingly.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the health care team to ensure continuity and coordination of care, appropriate care delivery and to report changes in patient’s condition.
  • Facilitate safe and timely patient throughput, including admission/transfer/discharge, diagnostics and therapeutics.
  • Comply with hospital policies and practices in all aspects of care and professional behavior.
  • Follow Joint Commission (TJC) and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) standards as part of routine practice.
  • Assist with annual PCT core competency program.
  • Attend and actively participate in unit staff meetings.
  • Attend and actively participate in shared governance through participation on committees or task forces.
  • Support Shared Governance.
  • Demonstrate support and compliance with UMMC Midtown Campus’ mission, vision, values, philosophy, goals objectives and policies.
  • Meet the continuing education and participation requirements of the clinical ladder.
