The Hematology/Oncology Care Unit (HCU) includes the inpatient and outpatient Hematology, Oncology, and Blood and Marrow Transplant patients. The 32-bed inpatient unit admits children of all ages with hematological and/or oncology, and blood and marrow transplant inpatient clinical needs. Significant patient populations include newly diagnosed oncology diseases (leukemia/lymphoma, solid tumors, neuro oncology), chemotherapy patients, sickle cell disease patients, those experiencing pain crisis in hemoglobinopathy, fever/neutropenia, bacteremia, anemia/blood disorders, acute chest syndrome/pneumonia, thrombocytopenia, and those undergoing blood and marrow and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children's National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. Children's National supports the development of RN relationships within the community, specifically those relationships associated with the health and well-being of the community at large.
