About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) independently provides holistic, individualized care using the Nursing Process for patients routinely seen on the unit. This role demonstrates an advanced level of clinical competency, nursing judgment, teaching skills, and a commitment to improving the quality of patient care. The RN independently performs general and unit-specific clinical skills and contributes positively to the Sierra View Medical Center Department of Patient Care Services and the Nursing profession. The position is responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care appropriate to the ages of the patients served, demonstrating the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of patient needs. This includes knowledge of growth and development and an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups. The role requires the ability to work scheduled hours, including holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call, and to participate in emergencies and community disasters as a designated disaster service worker. The employee has an affirmative duty to report perceived misconduct and must work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and demonstrate cooperative behavior.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.
  • Current BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care.
  • Current ACLS certification or obtain within six (6) months of assignment to department (six (6) month time frame is at the discretion of the Department Director).
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required.
  • Ability to calculate medications appropriate to patient population served.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to recognize patient education needs and seek necessary educational opportunities to manage identified needs to ensure quality and safe patient care.
  • Successfully completes a class in basic arrhythmia recognition, and maintains competency.
  • Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call.
  • Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the assessment, treatment and/or care appropriate to the ages of the patients served, demonstrating the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs, including knowledge of growth and development and the range of treatment needed for all patient groups.
  • Utilizes holistic assessment skills, recognizing subtle, covert or abnormal signs and symptoms that include patient/significant other involvement, discharge needs, psychosocial needs, biophysical needs, environmental needs, and teaching needs.
  • Identifies nursing diagnosis and interdependent nursing problems and selects applicable nursing care standards to guide patient care, recognizing issues that could impact the development of mutual goals.
  • Ensures the Care Plan is specific and unique to the individual patient utilizing Interdependent Nursing Standards and the discharge needs of complex/multi-system patients.
  • Safely performs nursing care, including safe administration of medication, troubleshoots equipment, and demonstrates skill in clinical problem-solving according to established clinical policy, procedure, and standards.
  • Ensures that the nursing care provided is consistent with the established Nursing Plan of Care, the Medical Plan of Care, and the ages of the patients served.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the Plan of Care and communicates through exchange report, making recommendations for future care consistent with current documentation.
  • Communicates evaluation of, or changes in, patient status, providing supportive data to the physician or health care team as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates adherence to the Joint Commission "National Patient Safety Goals for Hospitals" as defined by Scope of Practice.
  • Documentation reflects compliance with established Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role by adherence to NPSGs as it relates to area of practice.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the use, actions, and interactions of drugs used in combination for patients with multi-system problems.
  • Completes required unit-specific performance criteria checklist.
  • Demonstrates proper Infection Prevention skills, including standardized protocols or procedures related to central lines and indwelling Foley catheters.
  • Reports quality or Risk Management issues through appropriate lines of authority.
  • Maintains current knowledge of healthcare trends that affect the clinical practice of Nursing on the unit.
  • Demonstrates standards of documentation as evidenced by individual chart review and no letters of education in file.
  • Upholds all aspects of the Nursing Practice Act as defined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Provides evidence of adherence to all nine (9) ANA Code of Ethics for the Nursing profession.
  • On the shift assigned, performs the role of Intensive Care Unit RN according to the policies and procedures of Sierra View Medical Center and Critical Care Services.
  • Maintains certification by the American Heart Association in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
  • Successfully completes a class in basic arrhythmia recognition and maintains competency.
  • Initiates appropriate measures to support patient survivability and maintains functionality during life-threatening events.
  • Communicates patient needs with other care providers in an effective and timely manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of chain of command for effective issues resolution at SVMC.
  • Ensures the ICU rooms are set up properly to receive the critically ill patient in an efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates ability to care for the ICU patient population by passing the annual unit-specific competencies.
  • Is ready for shift huddle. Be in attendance on site and arrive to work on time.
