Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school program.
  • Current Professional Nurse License issued and/or recognized by Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas.
  • BLS and ACLS.
  • RNs in residency program must have ACLS by the completion of residency.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-2 years of ICU experience preferred
  • TNCC a plus

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for decision making relative to the nursing care of patients on a designated patient care unit during a designated shift.
  • Functions independently within established hospital and departmental policies and goals in rendering physical and supportive care and health teaching to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Safely manages the environment of care while providing services.
  • Interacts appropriately with staff, physicians, and other departments in collaborative relationships to meet patient/family needs.
  • Supervises and delegates appropriately to other licensed and non-licensed staff members in providing care to patients/families.
  • Utilizes effective communication in interpersonal relationships with patients, families, and other members of the health care team through verbal, non-verbal, & written methods on a daily basis.
  • Documents data related to patients' care including assessment results, interventions, medications, patient responses, or treatment changes in EMR.
  • Accurately obtains and records in EMR results of glucose monitoring and ACT Plus analyzer.
  • Accurately runs controls on glucometer and ACT Plus analyzers and documents QC appropriately. Ensures that control bottles and test cartridges are dated accurately.
  • Manages patients' pain relief and sedation by providing pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, monitoring patients' responses, and changing care plans accordingly.
  • Administers blood and blood product transfusions or intravenous infusions, monitoring patients for adverse reactions.
  • Competent to transport ICU/Ventilatory patients to radiology and other areas.
  • Competent to recover patients from OR.
  • Sets up, operates, or monitors invasive equipment and devices such as smart pumps, epidural pumps, pacemakers, warming and cooling machines, intra-aortic balloon pump, SCD's, mechanical ventilator.
  • Performs emergency medical procedures, such as basic cardiac life support (BLS), advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), and other condition stabilizing interventions.
  • Discusses illnesses and treatments with patients and family members.
  • Advocates for patients' and families' needs or provides emotional support for patients and their families.
  • Uses critical thinking skills in diagnosing clinical problems and in defining interventions.
  • Administers medications intravenously, by injection, orally, through gastric tubes, or by other methods (less than 3 errors for the year).
  • Prioritizes nursing care for assigned critically ill patients based on assessment data and identified needs.
  • Documents patients' medical histories, med reconciliation and assessment findings on admissions and completes all admission documentation in EMR.
  • Collaborates with other health care professionals and service providers to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Provides high-quality care to all patients & coordinates care with interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates knowledge regarding tissue and organ donation protocols and advanced directives.
  • Competent to titrate drips including but not limited to sedatives, vaso-active medications, insulin drips, paralytics, anti-arrhythmic medications.
  • Demonstrates leadership abilities and assumes leadership in the Registered Nurse role through various designated duties on a daily basis.
  • Initiates, supports, and facilitates the change process within the professional milieu in concert with institutional goals and objectives on an ongoing basis.
  • Provides preventative skin care and prevention of VAP, DVT, Falls, Infections, etc.
  • Enters ESRM for wounds POA.
  • Responds and participates in RRT calls and team leads Code Blues.
  • Ensures no fall out with Core measures.
  • Completes daily dashboard sheets for requirements of ICU care per protocols.
  • Competent to assist physician at bedside with procedures.
  • Competent to pull femoral arterial, venous sheaths, chest tubes, swan ganz, arterial lines, central venous catheters according to protocol.
