About The Position

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 7-bed Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit featuring private rooms equipped for advanced patient monitoring. Telemedicine intensivist services are available 24/7. The unit's skill mix includes RNs and Patient Care Technicians, managed by a Nurse Director and a Clinical Coordinator. Staffing is adjusted based on patient acuity and volume each shift. The Clinical Nurse roles (I, II, and III) integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to provide patient care, prevent illness, maintain wellness, and offer comfort. These roles involve administering medications safely, documenting care, and providing direction and education. Higher levels (Clinical Nurse II and III) demonstrate mastery of clinical skills, recognize and intervene in changing patient situations, mobilize resources, and assume leadership responsibilities, serving as role models. Independent actions include following physician orders, practicing within Virginia's nursing regulations, and adhering to the ANA Code of Ethics, VCUHS policies, and established practice standards. Supervisory responsibilities involve organizing work and delegating tasks to RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, and Unit Secretaries.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
  • Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clin I)
  • Academic Health Care Experience; Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clin II, Clin III)
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program (for Clin I, II, III)
  • Certification in specialty area (for Clin III)

Responsibilities

  • Integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of the patient and family.

  • Delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.

  • Mobilizes resources to meet the individualized needs of patient/families.
  • Provides direction, education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting.
  • Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RN's, LPN's, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
