The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a 7-bed Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit featuring private rooms equipped for advanced patient monitoring. Telemedicine intensivist services are available 24/7. The unit's skill mix includes RNs and Patient Care Technicians, managed by a Nurse Director and a Clinical Coordinator. Staffing is adjusted based on patient acuity and volume each shift. The Clinical Nurse roles (I, II, and III) integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to provide patient care, prevent illness, maintain wellness, and offer comfort. These roles involve administering medications safely, documenting care, and providing direction and education. Higher levels (Clinical Nurse II and III) demonstrate mastery of clinical skills, recognize and intervene in changing patient situations, mobilize resources, and assume leadership responsibilities, serving as role models. Independent actions include following physician orders, practicing within Virginia's nursing regulations, and adhering to the ANA Code of Ethics, VCUHS policies, and established practice standards. Supervisory responsibilities involve organizing work and delegating tasks to RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, and Unit Secretaries.
