About The Position

This position involves providing comprehensive nursing care within a healthcare unit, and potentially in housing units. The role requires assessing patients' physical, psychological, and social dimensions, applying knowledge of available resources for health history and assessment, and documenting patient status upon admission, during confinement, and upon discharge. The nurse will summarize assessment data, make triage decisions, and communicate these to other healthcare providers. Planning and implementing individual treatment programs, utilizing available treatment protocols, and referring patients to appropriate providers are key responsibilities. The role also includes administering medications, including IV therapy, and obtaining diagnostic tests and specimens. Nutrition and therapeutic diet plans are to be implemented as ordered, and nursing encounters must be documented using the SOAP format. Communication with other staff, respecting patient dignity and confidentiality are essential.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the state in which they are practicing.
  • Current CPR certification required.
  • Good physical and mental health.
  • Able to work under pressure.
  • Able to relate well to patients, security staff, visitors and co-workers.
  • Minimum of two (2) years clinical experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assess physical, psychological, and social dimensions of patients.
  • Apply knowledge of available resources in obtaining a health history and assessment.
  • Provide a written assessment of the patient on admission, during confinement, and on discharge.
  • Summarize assessment data and make a documented triage decision.
  • Plan and implement individual treatment programs.
  • Utilize available treatment protocols.
  • Utilize referral process to appropriate providers.
  • Apply knowledge and utilize available resources in planning care and patient teaching.
  • Consult with nurses, physicians, correctional officers, etc.
  • Implement clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Intervene with proper technique, procedures, and safety precautions.
  • Administer medications in accordance with physician’s orders, including IV therapy and other approved routes.
  • Utilize pharmacology knowledge for drug reactions and overdoses.
  • Obtain diagnostic tests and body fluid specimens.
  • Implement nutrition and therapeutic diet plans as ordered by physicians.
  • Document nursing encounters using the SOAP form of charting.
  • Communicate information to other nursing staff, physicians, medical unit supervisory personnel, correctional officers, and department heads.
  • Respect the dignity and confidentiality of patients.
  • Assess personal learning development needs and plan/implement a program to meet identified needs.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and perform nursing policies and procedures.
  • Support the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the nursing department.
  • Accept staffing assignments and perform other related duties as required or assigned.
  • Perform within the normal limits of state practice act, Code of Ethics for Nurses policies/procedures, facility policies/procedures, and standards.
  • Promote quality assurance standards by participating in quality of care chart audits.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with patients, medical and correctional personnel.
  • Promote good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Provide leadership to nursing staff.
  • Supervise and strive for excellence in patient care by challenging and correcting errors of peers.
  • Identify existing and potential problems and take effective action.
  • Develop and maintain an awareness of needed improvements in patient care, procedures, equipment, and supplies, and make recommendations to supervisors.
  • Assist in presentation of in-service education as requested.
  • Assume individual accountability for own conduct and maintenance of professional appearance.
  • Participate in nursing activities in corrections that promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care.
  • Approach change in a positive manner; motivate staff to work as a team; accept constructive criticism and learn from it.
