The Cancer Center Hematology Oncology Infusion unit provides specialized outpatient chemotherapy infusion care for patients with Oncology diagnoses, focusing on delivering high-quality, safe, and compassionate care. The team collaborates closely with Hematology and Oncology providers and other interdisciplinary cancer care team members to provide individualized, evidence-based care, emphasizing values of Team, Compassion, Excellence, and Purpose. Requirements

  • Requires an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Education: The Registered Nurse (RN) must have graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program.
  • Requires an active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Indiana or an active Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) RN license.
  • Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
  • Other advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior chemotherapy infusion experience preferred.
  • Prior oncology experience preferred.
  • OCN certification preferred; certification must be obtained within two years of hire.
  • Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO).

Responsibilities

  • Safely administer chemotherapy according to treatment plans and established protocols
  • Complete focused oncology assessments, verify laboratory results and treatment parameters, and recognize contraindications before initiating therapy
  • Manage central venous access devices and implanted ports using sterile technique, including access, blood sampling, medication administration, and complication prevention
  • Monitor for and promptly intervene in infusion reactions, hypersensitivity, extravasation, and other treatment-related emergencies
  • Provide patient and family education about treatment plans, potential side effects, symptom management, infection precautions, and when to contact the care team
